Featured Matches - ISML 2011 Sapphire Period
Sapphire 1 — 5 July 2011
Shiina (Angel Beats!) vs. Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
An unceasing air sweeps through the dusty battlefield as two figures approach one another. With a poker face and sharp eyes, Shiina walks cautiously with the wind blowing at her side. Every shuriken and short blade is placed for easy access. Following the traditions of the ninja way, she is ready to hide within the shadows and strike at her opponent’s every possible insecurity. From another corner walks a female with long silver hair that glitters with the night sky. Representing Germany, Laura Bodewig will make sure that everything goes according to plan toward her victory. It does not matter what kind of tactics she uses, as long as she comes out the victor. Both Valkyries stand face to face, saying no words and letting their eyes do the talking. Laura takes off her eye patch and reveals her Schwarzer Regen. Shiina does not flinch, but takes a step forward with her short sword in hand. Only one of them will finish the Regular Season with no victories. Both characters charge towards one another, and the fight for that one victory commences! |
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Kicking off Sapphire with an incredibly tough match, Hōki faces a fighter not known for ever backing down. Suffering her first loss of the season last period to none other than the soaring Tenshi, Shana is back with a vengeance and nothing will stand between her and the lossless periods she is known for. Having easily defeated two IS cadet representatives so far, the petite Shana is now dwarfed by the immense strength of Hōki's IS and determination to overcome obstacles. But like Shana, Hōki has not accounted for her opponent’s hidden powers as a Flame Haze. With Alastor held close against her heart, guiding her movements to the mecha's weaknesses, Shana fights her way towards the Sapphire Necklace and seeks a companion for Alastor, who in turn seeks the calm emanating from the soothing blues held in the gem to balance Shana's spirit. Twice already this calm has been held in Shana's hands, yet she has fallen short of the Tiara every time. Will the fourth time prove lucky for the ever-second tsundere? As the circling blazes spiral into a fiery red tornado, will Shana's Nietono no Shana be enough to exhaust the near-limitless energy of Houki's Akatsubaki? Or, will Shana lose another 7-0 period to the strong-willed newcomer? |
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!) vs. Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
Right off the bat, Sapphire draws Kugyu fans into another divide. The Palmtop Tiger is faced with none other than the blonde twin-tail that is Sanzen'in Nagi. Two years ago, Nagi came second to Taiga in Saimoe Japan, and Taiga is more than ready to repeat her performance. Finishing four places above her opponent in last year's ISML, Taiga casts away her practice shinai in favor of her bokken to once again teach the 13-year-old otaku not to mess with her and her friends. The Palmtop Taiga may be as much an Angel as a Tiger, but one slip and any questionable comment will be met with her sword. Nagi is familiar with this situation, though, not only having faced the fierce fighter before, but also recalling a time when a certain kendo club member challenged her to a duel. Faced with the dangerous end of the sword in the past, Nagi has learned from her mistakes and learned to protect herself, as Taiga has protected her own fragile soul. These two Kugimiya tsuns face off in an intense battle that all of ISML will flock to watch. Will Taiga deal another overwhelming victory against her Kugyu twin? Or, will Nagi finally break out from under the Palm of this Tiger and show everyone just how much she's grown since last year? |
Index L. Prohibitorum (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
vs. Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
With three period wins between the two of them, Amethyst didn’t give much to cheer about for either Index L. Prohibitorum or Huang Lingyin. Index ended the Amethyst Period with a crushing defeat at the hands of Kōsaka Kirino, while Lingyin was battered into submission by Hirasawa Ui. Their overall records during Amethyst have left much for which to be desired, with Index managing to win only two of her matches, whilst Lingyin fared slightly worse, winning her solitary match against Shiina. With every participant starting with a clean slate for Sapphire, both of these maidens need to go out and claim their first victories in order to propel themselves up in the overall standings. Will Index L. Prohibitorum, the benevolent nun from the Church of Necessarius, manage to open the new period with a win, or will Huang Lingyin, the IS-cadet representative from China, reign victorious over her instead? |
Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!) vs. Kotoboki Tsumugi (K-ON!)
Making it into the Regular Season is one thing. Doing well in it is a totally different matter. Kotobuki Tsumugi, who currently only has four wins, knows this fact all too well as her first season in ISML has been a dismal one thus far. A tough schedule may be partly to blame for her poor results, but this ojou-sama knows that she must work harder in order to surpass even the greatest of opponents. Today, she is pitted against fellow newcomer, Nakamura Yuri, who is currently in the Top 16. With similarly difficult schedules, it can be argued that Yuri is much stronger than Mugi. However, the leader of the SSS knows that she mustn't let her guard down. Yuri has worked hard to get to where she is today and would like nothing more than to keep moving up in the standings. As this battle gets underway, will Mugi be able to pull off a surprise victory over Yuri, or will bullets from her opponent’s Beretta 92 pistol be too much for the pianist to handle? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Holo (Spice and Wolf)
The vibes that both Katsura Hinagiku and Holo exude are those of self-sufficiency and haughtiness. But underneath these façades, lie the dark, unabated truths of these two maidens. After being abandoned as a child by her own parents, Katsura Hinagiku was left to fend for herself. Observing her older sister Yukiji try to repay the debt saddled onto them by their own biological parents, Hina learnt that life could be unforgiving. Deprived from the miracle of love from her own biological parent, she found solace when her sister managed to get the siblings a new foster family. The same fate had also befallen Holo. The Wise Wolf of Yoitsu, upon leaving her original land in the north, was revered as the harvest deity in the town of Pasloe. However as time moved on, she was forgotten by the townsfolk who used to rely on her for bountiful harvests. If she hadn’t met Kraft Lawrence, the Wise Wolf wouldn't have been able to escape her torment. With both of these maidens finally able to quench their thirsts for happiness, will the bokken-armed Katsura Hinagiku be able to overcome the endless knowledge of Holo? |
Shiina Mafuyu (Seitokai no Ichizon)
vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
Haruhi may be able to easily bully a nonchalant Kyon and a meek Mikuru into the SOS Brigade, but what will she do when faced with an oblivious otaku, known for letting all slights slide past unnoticed? We're all about to find out as Haruhi matches herself up against a sweet-natured Seitokai treasurer—one with a slightly darker side. Every dark cloud has a silver lining and every ray of sunshine casts a shadow. Mafuyu's adorable Moe trump card marks her place in the intense Boys' Love novel she writes, and even Haruhi is intrigued at the complexity of Mafuyu's equally balanced innocence, strength, and love for modern entertainment. The seemingly delicate princess may well be a valuable addition to Haruhi's band of misfits, and Haruhi's keen eye is quick to spot her potential. As Mafuyu faces a force of nature in and of itself, will her walkthrough be able to triumph and allow her to stay in her beloved seitokai? Or, will 'god' slam down an ultimatum that not even Mafuyu can refuse? |
Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD)
The newcomer, Charlotte Dunois, looks to take down the veteran, Fujibayashi Kyō, in a highly anticipated match-up. With this being her first year in ISML, Charlotte has done surprisingly well, posting an 18-3 record after the first three periods. France's IS-representative cadet has constantly won the hearts of the voters using her sweet and caring personality. On the other hand, Fujibayashi Kyō, who has been in ISML since 2008, is starting to lose the strength that she once had. Although she made it into the Top 16 three years in a row, Kyō's chances look bleak this year as she is currently sitting at 24th with a mediocre 11-10 record. As the purple-haired dictionary-thrower gets set to enter the Sapphire period, will she be able to stop Charlotte in her tracks, or will the blond-haired maiden dig an even deeper hole for Kyō? |
Sakagami Tomoyo (CLANNAD) vs. Senjōgahara Hitagi (Bakemonogatari)
Sakagami Tomoyo was at the brink of dropping out of school due to various unfortunate encounters. Wanting to become a normal girl living a normal life, she tried to change everything about herself by transferring to another place in a calmer town. There, people admired her for her strong personality and sense of justice, yet Tomoyo was always cautions about not showing her true self to anyone. A similar situation can be said about Senjōgahara Hitagi. Hitagi was a model student, exhibiting strengths in academics and athletics. One day after her graduation, Hitagi's weight mysteriously disappeared, which resulted in a change in her personality. Afraid that those who would notice would then fear her, Hitagi took a more cautious approach so as to not endanger others with her secret. Will either of these two girls ever find peace and be who they truly are at heart? They have a chance in this match, where they will have to put their pasts aside in order to tackle what is in front of them. |
Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto) vs. Saber (Fate/stay night)
It is hard to hide one's true personality, especially when it comes to these two competitors. Kōsaka Kirino may be a model student with great looks, good grades, and athletic capabilities; however, she is actually an otaku. With a room overflowing with a multitude of visual novels, figurines, and posters, one can easily tell that she is a hardcore fan in the anime industry. Due to the negative stereotypes of the otaku community, she is always at conflict with herself about who she truly wants to be. At first glance, Saber appears to be a silent, well-mannered young lady. No one would ever guess that she is a warrior silently fighting in the Holy Grail War. Saber views herself as a knight and ignores her feminine gender. She becomes insecure when people try to treat her normally, a situation that she has never encountered before. Now, these two stare at each other eye-to-eye, preparing for the battle at hand. Can Kirino call out Meruru in time to defeat her opponent, or is Saber's Excalibur too strong and fast for her to handle? |
Ayanami Rei (Neon Genesis Evangelion) vs. Chidori Kaname (Full Metal Panic!)
The first exhibition match for the Sapphire Period pits Ayanami Rei against Chidori Kaname. Piloting EVA Unit 00, Rei can be implicitly categorised as a kuudere. Rarely seen projecting her feelings, she is called a puppet or a doll by one of her colleagues. Her cool and silent demeanor makes a lot of people scornful towards her. After the fated battle against Ramiel, she showed the world the emotions that she kept hidden. On the other end of the archetype spectrum is Chidori Kaname—a tsundere. Cheerful, boundless in energy, and smart, Chidori is one of the Whispered. Inside her brain lies the Black Technology to make Lambda Drivers, which are highly sought commodities. Upon arriving safely in Tokyo after her kidnapping, she shows her caring side to her saviour. Which one of these maidens will be the choice of the voter? Will it be a kuudere, aptly portrayed by Ayanami Rei, or will it be Chidori Kaname, the tsundere, who gains the upper hand? |

Sapphire 2 — 7 July 2011
Iwasawa Asami (Angel Beats!) vs. Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
A musician lives to mellow the hearts of skeptics. A musician listens to the auras of their spirits. A musician plays to guide them to their souls. This is a tall order to ask of a quiet girl not yet out of high school, nevertheless, it is one Iwasawa will not refuse. Music saved her, songs released her, and death gave her a new view of life. If a soft ballad is enough to even crack the hard shell of dissonance, duty, and discipline surrounding Nagato Yuki, then Asami can rest in peace tonight. The faint melody dancing across guitar strings stretches towards the silent alien; the muse's voice envelops the AI's too-still frame. Deft, experienced fingers pluck at the stiff chords of Yuki's heart, softening them, soothing them. The sensitive, shy side of the taciturn watcher strains against the wall separating her from the outside. The inner spirit of the human Nagato, brimming with hidden feelings, fights the unforgiving, inconsiderate constraints set by a heartless Data Thought Entity. But, Yuki knows what Iwasawa does not. She knows the havoc that could be wrecked should this wellspring of blind emotion be released, the impossible boredom forced upon Haruhi, the unrequited affection pouring from Koizumi, the bewildered fears of Kyon. Chaos could well reign should she fail to keep order on the inside as on the out. Will Iwasawa draw out her suppressed passion? Or, will Yuki return to the SOS Brigade, triumphant once more? |
Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!) vs. Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
Things don't look to be getting any easier for Kotobuki Tsumugi, as she is up against her second Top 16-opponent in the Sapphire period. Although this wealthy ojō-sama rarely experienced difficulties and hardships as a child, her first ISML season has been filled with nothing but tough battles. Despite this, Mugi looks ahead, with determination and optimism. Across from her stands her opponent, Katsura Hinagiku. Hina arguably started out the complete opposite of Mugi when it comes to wealth. After her parents left Hina and her older sister a large debt and abandoned them, they were forced to fend for themselves. These troubling times shaped Hina into who she is today. As the current ISML Seitokai president prepares for combat against the former Seitokai secretary, who will emerge victorious? Will Hina and her bokken force Mugi into submission, or will the melodic tune from her opponent's Korg Triton Extreme 76-key keyboard mesmerize her? |
Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Kuroi Mato (Black ★ Rock Shooter)
From one HanaKana to another, Seraphim works her way through the Order of the Lotus to face a bright, bubbly middle-schooler with a heart of gold. As different as can be, both the proud vampire-ninja and the basketball ace have suffered much to save their friends. Braving the anger, resentment and judgment of her fellow kyuketsu-ninjas, Sera-san placed Yū's life over the strict discipline that dictated her traditions, ignoring the rules of her kind and placing her own life at risk to save the kind necromancer. Mato, too, faced enemies more powerful than she, battling the selfish nemesis that embodied the hurt, betrayal, and jealousy that held Yomi prisoner. Sapphire Round 1 placed Sera against a near-invincible opponent, while offering Mato a match too good to lose, but tonight, it gets personal. Once again these two steadfast, loyal fighters stand to protect those who depend on them. Will Mato prove too fast for Seraphim's sword? Or, will the tornado of leaves at Sera's beck and call be too much for even Mato to dribble around? |
Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!) vs. Kasugano Sora (Yosuga no Sora)
From black to white, the soft-spoken Seitokaichō steps back from her triumph over one proud beauty to rebuke her meek kōhai. Her quiet calm has proven effective against even the sharp tsundere-tongue of the long-standing favorite, Shana, but will Kanade's logic and reason prevail under Sora's adorably gentle gaze? The epitome of moe, both Kanade and Sora have suffered in life, from weak health, to misunderstandings, and to the sights of their loved ones disappearing from their lives. Hurt and fearful in equal parts, neither knows how to reach out and show the world their inner sensitivities, the selves beneath their superficial beauties. Sora's selfish, spoiled-brat façade hides a vulnerable orphan in fear of being left truly alone in this world, a fragile child scared of losing the only person she has left: her twin brother, Haruka. Nicknamed 'Tenshi' by those who sought revenge against her assumed master and were oblivious to the truth, Kanade's cold, emotionless silence protects a heart broken over and over by friends who left for a better place, a lonely girl who lost everyone she ever cared for. As the soft wind lifts their snow-white hair, hiding the tears that threaten to fall, will Sora's perseverance allow her to conquer the ISML 2011 goddess and be reunited with her beloved brother? Or, will Kanade's heart flutter upwards once again, proving there's more to moe than just a cute face? |
Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) vs. Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto)
Along with fellow band member, Akiyama Mio, Nakano Asuza has also been doing extremely well in this year's ISML. When on stage, Azu-nyan tries her very best to deliver the finest performance for her audience. During club meetings, she also works hard to keep up with the craziness that surrounds her. Though not in a band, Aragaki Ayase, too, finds herself in the spotlight at times during her part-time modeling job. With a perfect body and a caring personality, this young girl is always willing to talk to her friends and spend time with them. No matter what the situation is, Ayase always values her relationships with others. When all is said and done, which one of these lovely ladies will be left standing? Will Azusa be able to rhythmically stun her opponent, or will Ayase's beauty be the deciding factor in this match? |
Shiina (Angel Beats!) vs. Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
The long and dangerous hunt for Kami-sama has finally ended for Shiina. Alone, the quiet kunoichi stands defiant, challenging the center of the universe, the power of hell's scythe itself. In her small, childlike hands, Eucliwood holds powers beyond the likes of which any could imagine, powers that confine life and all who live—powers that confine her. Her gentle gaze belies the vulnerable girl trapped beneath, too scared to even betray an emotion, lest it ripple the fabric of reality. Her only thoughts flow through her reticent pen. But, her word alone can change the world, a world whose injustice and cruelty Shiina suffered, a life spent that she wishes to avenge. Left to fend for herself, Shiina learnt to protect a heart no one would care for, training until she could match the might of a hundred men. Fighting for survival even through her afterlife, few see beneath the solitary, hostile mask to the sad girl who lost her childhood, left alone with only the understanding and love of a few cute wind-up toys in the realm of the dead. Sapphire light emanates from the ground, bleeding into the ninja's hair, pouring from the necromancer's eyes. Dead faces Death. Hurt questions hurting. Whispers melt into Silence. The SSS has finally met its Maker. |
Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD) vs. Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
The door slowly creaks open as Fujibayashi Kyō cautiously enters the Sanzen'in mansion. Her footsteps echoing with each step, the purple-haired girl nervously looks around for any sign of danger. A short while later, she hears a sound from within a nearby room. Curious, Kyō silently moves towards the door of the mysterious room and presses her ear against it. Silence. As her desire to uncover this mystery grows, Kyō decides to enter the room, knowing full well of the possible risks. It takes a while for her to adjust to the pitch-black surroundings. Suddenly, the door slams shut behind her, sending chills down her spine. Slowly turning around, she realizes that she is now standing across from the heir to the estate, Sanzen'in Nagi, who doesn’t look too amused. With a surprisingly loud shout, Nagi starts running angrily towards Kyō. Not wanting to go down without a fight, Kyō charges towards her incoming opponent and the battle begins! |
Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto) vs. Yui (Angel Beats!)
Today's match features two of ISML's lovable fang-tans—Kōsaka Kirino and Yui. Excellence in both academics and athletics, along with a part-time modeling job, make Kirino the perfect middle school student. She is adored by everyone around her and her energetic personality is loved by many. With this much success, there seems to be nothing that is impossible for her. Yui, on the other hand, was bedridden for most of her childhood after an unfortunate car accident paralyzed her from the waist down. Even a simple activity like playing baseball was impossible for her. It was only when she reached the Afterlife that she was finally able to fulfill her dreams and wishes. After knowing the extremely different lives these two girls have led, which one of them will you choose? Will it be Kirino's beauty and intelligence, or Yui's optimistic smile amidst hardships that grabs your vote today? |
Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Sakagami Tomoyo (CLANNAD)
Two major ISML icons clash once more to provide yet another battle of epic proportions. Suzumiya Haruhi still remains a major force to be reckoned with. Even after several losses, Haruhi continues to cling onto the Top 16. For her, it does not matter what she has to do as long as she is able to participate in the Postseason every year. As she currently stands just under the borderline for the Postseason, Tomoyo needs all the strength that she can get to make it back to the top. The previous round’s victory over Senjōgahara Hitagi provided much needed momentum to continue her race to the top, and she needs at least two victories to return to the Top 16—the next victim could be Haruhi. Both members have clashed through various incidences in ISML and now have a score of 2-2. A victory from either of these girls would not only break their tie, but also bring one girl a step closer to the Postseason. Will Haruhi, whose Ruby necklace trained her with fire, scorch her opponent, or will Tomoyo, whose Aquamarine necklace taught her water, douse her adversary instead? |
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
Kugimiya Rie against Hanazawa Kana; Aisaka Taiga against Sengoku Nadeko; the clash between the Queen of Tsundere against the rising star in the seiyū industry. Kugyū and HanaKana have four and five ISML maidens, respectively, under their wings, showing their dominant grips in the seiyū world. Taiga represents one of Kugyū’s stereotypical roles as a high class, slightly small in stature tsundere, while KanaHana usually voices the more soft spoken, moe-esque and sweet type of anime maidens, such as Nadeko. While their cuteness can’t be denied, Taiga’s strong and violent if she’s displeased, while Nadeko keeps her problems to herself. They each are the perfect antithesis of the other when it comes to their personalities. So, will the Kugyū-powered Aisaka Taiga beat Sengoku Nadeko, or will the HanaKana factor swing the match the opposite way? |
Senjōgahara Hitagi (Bakemonogatari) vs. Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!)
We are at the middle of the Regular Season, and girls close to the Top 16 need to step up their games immediately if they wish to participate in the Postseason. Among those girls stand Senjōgahara Hitagi and Hirasawa Yui, who are ranked 19th and 18th, respectively. Hitagi is a self-proclaimed tsundere who usually taunts those around her before getting to the main point. She has no trouble saying anything that comes to her mind and rarely takes any of her words back. Yui is more of a lax, carefree schoolgirl than anything else. With sweets as her drive to success, Yui will go out and do anything to help her friends, even if they find her a nuisance. For now, Hitagi has no time to fool around, nor does Yui have time to loaf around and eat cake. Because these girls have the exact same win/loss count, a victory here will be a huge help for getting another step closer to the Top 16. Can Hitagi frighten her opponent away with her dangerous use of school supplies, or can Yui slip past her with her guitar at hand? |
Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
vs. Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
The second round of Sapphire features a double dosage of tsundere: Misaka Mikoto squaring off against Huang Lingyin. With her ability to command and manipulate the flow of electrons, Mikoto is known as the Electromaster in Academy City. Woe to those who seek direct confrontation against the cute student from Tokiwadai all-girl’s school, for her lightning and railgun attacks can easily turn her opponents into heaps of smithereens. Armed with the third generation IS, Shenlong, Lingyin is the Chinese representative at IS Academy. Specialising in close quarter combat, Lingyin can easily overpower her counterparts using either Shenlong’s huge sword or dragon cannons, as a certain boy can concur. As the dust settles after their match, which one of these maidens will emerge victorious? Will Misaka Mikoto electrocute Huang Lingyin into submission, or will the Shenlong-powered Lingyin overpower the Electromaster instead? |
Shiomiya Shiori (Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai) vs. Yūki Mikan (To-LOVE Ru)
While the first Sapphire exhibition match pitted two, so-called "old-school girls" against each other, the second exhibition match presents a clash between two girls from two recently concluded anime. Both Shiomiya Shiori and Yūki Mikan are voiced by Hanazawa Kana, one of the most prominent seiyū in the modern day anime world. Shiori is a quiet bookworm, who is shy and taciturn in behaviour, and struggles to express herself in front of others. Only after ‘divine’ intervention from the God of Love, does she learn to express herself more openly. Mikan portrays herself as a model student. Mature, motherly, and one who excels in doing daily chores, she still maintains good results in school and socialises with her friends. She’s usually the voice of reason, in the midst of the whacky To-LOVE Ru cast around her. As the HanaKana faction is split between Shiomiya Shiori and Yūki Mikan during this exhibition match, which girl will emerge victorious? |

Sapphire 3 — 10 July 2011
Tōsaka Rin (Fate/stay night) vs. Saber (Fate/stay night)
The once-mighty magus staggers, falling to her knees. Expended jewels fall from her now-weak hand, mockingly winking at her as they lose themselves in the earth. The years have not been kind to the learnt Master. Once, she was as strong as the Servant whose sword her Archer faces, but now, her power has dwindled. Time and again she has dodged the final blow from the ageless Saber, but the War has run its course, and no more can Rin and Shirō avoid the inevitable confrontation. The stubborn King, ruthless in battle, stares at the girl who once saved her very life, her sword poised to kill. Both have known from the very beginning that there can be only one victor; but against their better judgments, they became necessary allies, and against their flawless strategies, they've become friends. A whispered apology. A near-certain end. Excalibur flashes. Lights flare from Rin's hidden hand. A blinding dome of light envelops the dueler, a tornado of debris forced into existence by the raw energy emanating from their magic. As the light fades and the dust settles, only one will remain standing. |
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!) vs. Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto)
Dwarfed by the arch around the blue-washed stage, the Palmtop Tiger glares at yet another fashionable icon of modern beauty. As if Ami weren't enough of an influence in her life, the doll-like tsundere is now up against another blue-haired model, OreImo's Ayase. Despite her short stature and adorable features, Taiga is not about to let anyone threaten the position of the school idol that is her friend, no matter how love-hate their relationship may be. Baka-chi' is her Baka-chi'! But Ayase isn't any normal clueless newcomer; she knows this is her chance. Sapphire is the period of blue, and Taiga's Topaz is long past—not to mention the ease with which her friend Ruri already won against the sharp-tongued fighter, her words twisting past Taiga's impatient temper. The only thing this rising star requires is pure honesty, and her moral, if a bit biased, view of the world cannot be warped. Duality infuriates this normally easy-going girl, and the apparent duality of Taiga and her closest friends is too much for her to take. It must be addressed. Still, there's one little issue Ayase didn't take into consideration: while Kirino is off playing eroge as usual, Taiga's friends have all banded together to support her. Will the upright schoolgirl be able to keep her moral high ground? Or, will the Angel of Love be able to convince her that there's more than one way to view the world? |
Furukawa Nagisa (CLANNAD) vs. Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto)
A character obsessing over some materialistic item is undoubtedly popular in anime. This brings us to today's match-up where the Dango Daikazoku fanatic, Furukawa Nagisa, prepares for a battle against the eroge-loving otaku, Kōsaka Kirino. A weak body has plagued Nagisa ever since she caught a life-threatening fever as a child. Despite this, she works extremely hard in order to reach her dreams—whether it is representing the theater club at the school festival or working as the secretary in the ISML Seitokai. Kirino, on the other hand, has always excelled in all areas of life. From academic excellence to a perfect body, Kirino has it all. On top of her responsibilities as a middle school student, she is still able to handle a part-time modeling job, showing her superb time management skills. With each girl supporting her own interests, which one of them will you side with? Will Nagisa and the Dango Daikazoku draw you in, or will the temptation of Kirino's imōto eroge be too much for you to resist? |
Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Last Order (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
Naiveté can often be associated with young age. Unaware of adults’ capability for slyness, Misaka Mikoto consented to the mapping of her DNA genome when she was still a child, under the pretext of curing neuronal diseases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Thus, the whole Misaka Clone network was born, with the main purpose to level shift the strongest level five esper in Gakuen City into uncharted territory: evolving Accelerator into level six. Twenty thousand imōto were created as substitutes for the 128 Railguns that were needed for the project, with Last Order as the fail-safe mechanism. Burdened with her feelings of resentment and despair, Railgun was about to sacrifice herself to Accelerator and prove that the Tree Diagram calculations could be wrong. The Electromaster was saved, as a certain level zero boy did the unthinkable by beating the level six esper. Ironically, Accelerator later met Last Order and learnt to care for others, even with his hands already stained with the blood of 10031 of the sister clones. With the Level Shift project scrapped, which girl will gain more happiness, Misaka Mikoto for saving the lives of the remaining 9969 clones, or Last Order for being able to finally leave the lab, and stay with Accelerator? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
vs. Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Winning. That is the one thing that Laura Bodewig has yet to experience during this year's ISML. Currently owning the only winless record among the fifty Regular Season contestants, Laura has struggled exceptionally despite having an easier schedule than many girls who are above her in the standings. On the bright side, the feat of making it into the Regular Season is something Laura should be proud of. Standing across from her today is Katsura Hinagiku, the current ISML Seitokai president. Unlike Laura, Hina has been in the ISML since 2008, never failing to make it into the Postseason. Despite the slowly decreasing popularity of the Hayate no Gotoku! series, she is still holding onto a Postseason spot at 13th. As these two ladies square off, will Hina be able to extend Laura's losing streak, or will her opponent pull off a huge upset? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Shiina Mafuyu (Seitokai no Ichizon)
A bibliophile against an avid gamer, that’s what we can say about this match pitting Nagato Yuki against Shiina Mafuyu. Kūdere in nature, Yuki immerses herself in books, and rarely interacts with the SOS Brigade members. This artificial human, created by the Integrated Data Entity, silently observes her surroundings, making others wonder what is actually inside her mind. With world-bending powers at her disposal, she silently trudges the path of the silent observer. A swaying bishōjo in appearance, Mafuyu rarely leaves her home without her handheld PSP and BL novels. Even though she has some difficulties with boys that make her look like an easy target for affection, her wild fantasies often leave the club members stunned. Sugisaki Ken was forced to reassess his early assumption of her as being the easiest girl to capture. Will books lead Nagato Yuki towards another victory in the Sapphire period, or will Shiina Mafuyu's PSP help her obtain her first win in this phase over her imposing opponent? |
Nakano Asuza (K-ON!) vs. Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
As the dust settles, Fujibayashi Kyō walks away with her head held high after vanquishing Sanzen'in Nagi in Sapphire Round 2. After picking herself back up, Nagi shuts herself in her room, wondering what went wrong. However, there is no time to dwell upon the past as today's challenger quickly advances towards the Sanzen'in mansion. Looking out the window, Nagi spots Nakano Azusa, one of the ISML's elite. Despite Azusa’s innocent and cute looks, Nagi knows that she is capable of obliterating anyone who gets in her way, with her current 21-2 record proving this. Nonetheless, Nagi readies herself for this tough battle ahead, knowing full well that, although it will be difficult, she still has a chance to emerge victorious if she fights. Upon exiting her room and descending the stairs, Nagi hears the front door closing. Her eyes lock onto the small figure standing in the entrance. At this, the two twin-tails charge menacingly towards each other, with the desire to win burning deep inside both of their hearts. |
Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
This match-up squares off two maidens of contrasting personalities. Shinonono Hōki is a beautiful girl, but don’t let her features mislead you into believing that she is all about physical beauty. Properly trained in kendo, she has the physical prowess to match her undoubted charm. Her headstrong mentality means that she will try her best to grab what she wants in her life. On the other hand, Sengoku Nadeko can be categorised as a cute, young girl, both mentally and physically. Her small stature, coupled with her shy behaviour, makes the people around her want to embrace and protect her. Not physically imposing, she accepts her fate and writhes alone instead of retaliating back against the curses afflicted upon her by the people who resent her. While both of the contestants’ approaches to the world differ, their ultimate goals remain the same—to lead happy lives with the people they care about the most. With such asymmetrical attributes, which traits will the voters prefer? |
Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!) vs. Kasugano Sora (Yosuga no Sora)
Today, a veteran and a newcomer with different personalities will battle against each other. Hōkago Tea Time's lead guitarist, Hirasawa Yui, is an energetic and clumsy girl who loves sweet and cute things around her. Despite not being able to read sheet music, Yui tried her hardest to learn how to play the guitar with the help of her friends at school. Her opponent today has already defeated her sister, Hirasawa Ui, 3836-3790 on Day 4 of Preliminary Phase II, and Yui does not want the same thing to happen to her. Although her personality is troublesome and her health is poor, Kasugano Sora still lives on. After the tragic loss of her parents, the only person who she could depend on was her twin brother. As the angelic-looking Sora faces the older Hirasawa sister, will Yui’s electric guitar, Heritage Cherry Sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standard, alias “Gita,” help to avenge her sister's loss? Or will Sora complete her sweep of the Hirasawa sisters? |
Kuroi Mato (Black ★ Rock Shooter) vs. Louise Vallière (Zero no Tsukaima)
Faction matches are rife across ISML, and with the strongest of the strong having faced off last period, what better time is there for the weaker challengers to meet than now? Seiyū battles are in hot debate near the top of the board, but when it comes down the ranks, the effects don't seem nearly half as strong. With the rest of the Order of the Lotus being shy, quiet kūdere types, Mato marks Hanazawa Kana in a new role: an active, bubbly child, who goes out to make friends, rather than the other way around. With just a short, 50-minute OVA behind her, the black rock shooter sometimes gets overlooked by voters—even with the soothing voice of HanaKana—and stands a good way behind the rest of the Order with a likely chance of losing to the older, but slightly weaker Kugyu fanbase. Likewise, Louise, even with three full seasons, falls short of her high school tsundere counterpart of a single season, Taiga. But Louise has proven the world wrong once before for underestimating her, showing everyone a magic far stronger than the likes of which anyone had ever imagined, and she's more than ready to do it again, starting with the first step of the Kana ladder. In another blue versus pink battle, will Mato finally join the ranks of recognition with her HanaKana sisters? Or will Louise prove the strength of the tsundere twins and pull the Kugyu pack closer together? |
Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
Two veterans, who have been part of ISML since its inception, look to continue their campaign to claim the Heavenly Tiara. Shana was born and raised to fight in order to protect herself and the rest of humanity from harm. Each time she goes into battle, she only sees the enemy in front of her and shows no fear. Upon meeting a human who was a shadow of his former self, she began to realize that there is more to life than just fighting. Her opponent’s responsibilities are not as big, but she, too, has a shorter temper. Fujibayashi Kyō is responsible for maintaining order in her class and will personally punish those who cause trouble. Only her friends know that she has a caring side and will not hesitate to help others out. Shana has won the past two Sapphire necklaces and has a total of five necklaces in her overall ISML career, but Kyō claims the first Sapphire necklace win in 2008. Both challengers are looking to return to the Postseason for a 4th year in a row. Will the Flame Haze continue her domination over her opponent, or will the class representative finally get her first win against her rival and prove that she still has some fight left in her? |
Chii (Chobits) vs. Kagura (Gintama)
Chii stands in the middle of a grassy plane, alone with the wind against her. Does Chii remember such a calm place? The setting seems very nostalgic for her, but she does not understand why. As she continues to walk aimlessly in the never-ending sea of grass, she sees a shady figure walking towards her. Relieved that she is not alone in this world, Chii mistakenly runs up to the figure. Bullets fire at her, purposefully missing her feet. Chii is scared; is it another person who wishes to capture her for her uniqueness? She tries to run away, but her clothes are not suited for any aerobic activity. The silhouette walks closer to Chii, revealing itself as a young woman with a stunning Chinese dress and notable orange hair, fashioned with accessories. She points her umbrella at Chii's face, confusing her. She is just an innocent girl, who knows nothing about Earth, and is trying her best to learn how to go through life with her master. However, Chii can see that her hunter's hands are shaking. The strange girl does not seem to wish to kill, and Chii can see that she must have been forced to undertake such measures. She is glad that her hunter has such a kind heart and stands up, frightening her adversary for a moment. If Chii wishes to leave this situation alive, she has no other choice but to stand her ground. |

Sapphire 4 — 12 July 2011
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
A flash of white and the Palmtop Tiger stands ready, her bokken in hand. A deft flick of a practiced wrist, a streak of black, and the high-schooler going by “Hirai Yukari” is no more. In her place the Flame Haze stands, her fiery Nietono no Shana challenging the slender wood of Taiga's sword. The two petite warriors glare at each other, still but for the rapid-fire dares that fly from their tongues. Alike in so many ways, from their fighting spirits to their naïve, fragile hearts, the two Sapphire Period VPs share the one thing that can never be changed: their voice. As they hurl insults and argue with one another, this battle becomes a Kugimiya Rie monologue, and the Kugyu faction is torn between their strongest and dearest girls. With two Knights already felled by Taiga's blade, the doll-like Tiger seeks to finally topple the well-loved favorite and proclaim to the world that she is the last one standing: she is the winner. But Shana has never lost a single match in Sapphire, holding the longest win-record for the period, and a triumph here will set her well on her way to donning another Necklace to sooth her spirited temperament—her third such necklace. The world watches as their blades crash together, a blur of red and brown. Breaking apart for but a second, the two balls of energy merge and circle, painting brilliance across the night sky. Flame to burning fire and ice to melting snow; the nimble tsundere twins fight on. |
Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!) vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
A gentle knock. A decisive invitation. The soft-spoken Student Council President's calm face betrays no surprise as she is ushered by a stuttering bunny-girl into what is supposed to be the Literature Club. Her quiet eyes assess the still members of the club frozen in shock, or perhaps fear, of what her next few words might bring into existence. An impatient tap pulls all attention towards the window, light framing a beautiful face marred by a familiar scowl, obvious displeasure at the interruption. Haruhi's sharp question clings to the near-tangible tension in the air, ignored as Kanade steps forward to address her classmate. Rules are rules: this room belongs to the school and the SOS Brigade has no business using it for their own activities. Suzumiya Haruhi has no business using it for her amusement. A sudden thud resounds as Nagato slams her book shut, cautiously rising to her feet. But Haruhi's scowl softens as she grabs Kanade, turning her gaze down the length of the small room. A broad sweep of her arm draws back an invisible curtain, revealing the countless laughs, the endless games, and the unspoken fun that has filled the clubroom since the inception of her Brigade. A flood of memories washes over them, of the crazy ideas that came to fruition, of the insane dreams that became possible, of the loyal, steadfast leader who is the core of their merry band of misfits. Four pairs of eyes blink in surprise. When did Haruhi's enjoyment become their own? One after another, they back down until only Kanade and Haruhi are left, eye-to-eye, neither bending to the will of the other. The quiet, law-abiding Tenshi is awed by the raw power emanating from the slender frame of god herself, but duty calls, and it is her responsibility to challenge the source of her pure energy—her task to set limitations on the limitless. |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
Despite this being her first season in the ISML, Gokō Ruri has performed brilliantly. With her only losses coming against elite opponents who have a combined record of 69-3, it's understandable why this newcomer is in the running for the Heavenly Tiara. However, even with this much success, Kuroneko can't afford to get ahead of herself just yet, as she still has many obstacles to overcome on her way to the top of the ISML world. One such obstacle happens to confront her today, in the form of Akiyama Mio, bearer of the 2010 Heavenly Tiara. Although she may be weaker now, Mio is still a force to be reckoned with—currently sitting at 6th with a 22-2 record. If standings are an indication of strength in these unpredictable match-ups, Mio is expected to win. However, nothing is certain as upsets have happened before and will happen again. So now, as the skilled bassist squares off against the self-proclaimed fallen angel, who will be the last one standing? Will Mio prove to all her doubters that she is still capable of winning difficult matches, or will Kuroneko manage to pull off an upset and vanquish the 2010 Tiara bearer? |
Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky ☆ Star) vs. Izumi Konata (Lucky ☆ Star)
An unusual conversation about a chocolate cornet was all it took for these two girls to become fast and unbreakable friends. It is funny how an intelligent, athletic, and moralistic girl can put up with a lazy, crazy, otaku girl and still remain sane the second after she opens her mouth. However, this is not all one can say about Hiiragi Kagami and Izumi Konata. Kagami is the most reasonable in the Lucky ☆ Star circle. Given the right comment at the right moment, Kagami reverts anyone back to reality and questions the logic behind his or her ridiculous statement. Even so, she does listen to others and makes sure to understand the entire situation of a person before reacting otherwise. In contrast, Konata has mastered the ability to swing any conversation in her direction. She is always ready with a smart remark, parodying several well-known anime and manga. Despite her over-the-top personality, Konata knows when and where to say things and will try to cheer up anyone who feels down. In a battle between best friends, can Kagami outdo her opponent once more, or will Konata finally get a chance to defeat her rival after years of losses against her? |
Index L. Prohibitorum (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
vs. Last Order (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
After her grueling match against the Railgun in the last round, Last Order's next assignment is to square off against the benevolent nun from the Church of Neccesarius, Index L. Prohibitorum. Both are cute, young girls, cheerful in the tainted world of the Gakuen City. Even though both maidens know full well the trials and tribulations that await them, they continue to lead their lives the way they want, by beaming their honest smiles across their faces. Controlling the whole Misaka Network means that anyone who can get their fingers on Last Order will hold a substantial amount of power, while a successful attempt in capturing Index will mean the culprit will have access to 103,000 magical grimoires stored inside her brain. Even with their lives constantly in danger, they cling to that one hope that their knight in shining armour will come to their rescue, when the need arises. This begs a question, which one of these two will need more protection—will it be Last Order, or will it be Index L. Prohibitorum? |
Haruna (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
A battle of wits, energy, and attention span awaits the masō-shōjo and her rich, otaku opponent. Child prodigies and geniuses in their own rights, Haruna and Nagi each face the first, and possibly only, challenger to ever match their respective intellects and childish zest for 'friendly' competition. A weather-worn veteran by this point, the blonde twin-tail is certain that her extensive experience and loyal fans will easily give her the advantage over the newcomer; after all, she didn't skip grades for nothing. And she can do anything Hinagiku can do. But unlike her pink-haired friend, Nagi lacks Hinagiku's foresight and preparation, and Haruna is more than ready to take advantage of the petite tsundere's lack of defenses and come away with a win. A mere 13-year-old is nothing compared to the swarms of Megalos that she's faced. In the blink of an eye, the fang-tan stands adorned in her magical-girl clothes, her newly re-acquired magical chainsaw Mystletainn whirring to go. As their over-bright eyes each stare down the other, which of these pettanko loli will triumph? |
Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Having already faced the other four K-ON! girls, Charlotte Dunois hopes to improve to 4-1 against them this season. However, even when she was at her peak, Charlotte still suffered a devastating 965-vote loss at the hands of the 2010 Tiara bearer, Akiyama Mio. Now, with her power rapidly decreasing, many doubt her chances against Nakano Azusa who, like Mio, holds a 22-2 record. Charlotte knows that she must fight on in order to keep her Postseason spot. As for Azusa, who comfortably sits at 5th, this match may determine whether or not she is stronger than Mio-senpai. If the Saimoe Japan 2010 champion manages to pull off a convincing victory, she furthers her claim as a contender for this year's Heavenly Tiara. As this elite match-up gets underway, which one of these young ladies will emerge victorious? Will Charlotte Dunois be able to silence her critics with a win against one of ISML's elites, or will Nakano Azusa build upon an already impressive year with a win over another Top 16 contestant? |
Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!)
Aside from the highly anticipated match-up between Nakano Azusa and Charlotte Dunois, another K-ON! versus IS <Infinite Stratos> match-up also takes place in Sapphire Round 4. As they look on from the outside, both Laura Bodewig and Kotobuki Tsumugi know full well the pain of being left behind in the standings by their fellow series’ members. Even though Laura is still winless this season, Mugi isn't faring much better. With the chance to get one step closer to their friends now here, both girls are fueled with the desire to win. In the end, which one of them will you aid? Is the blonde ojō-sama your choice for this match, or will you choose Germany's IS representative cadet? |
Tōsaka Rin (Fate/stay night) vs. Furukawa Nagisa (CLANNAD)
Hard workers in their own ways, Tōsaka Rin and Furukawa Nagisa will battle to see who the best competitor is. Rin is a model student and an idol of her school. Behind the scenes, she has trained hard to become the strongest in the Holy Grail War, and will do everything in her power to obtain victory. Despite her competitive attitude and solitary lifestyle, Rin is gentle and thinks well about her peers and what she has to do as a person, not as a sorceress. While Nagisa does not possess any magical powers, she does have a hard time with her school life. Fighting against her sickness for the past year, Nagisa found herself repeating school once more. Even so, she kept her head high and was determined to make every day as memorable as possible. Will Rin blast her opponent away once more with her strength, or will today mark the first time that Nagisa finally defeats Rin? |
Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto)
After things didn't go as planned in her match against Yui, Kōsaka Kirino has another chance to prove that she is one of ISML's elite fang-tans as she prepares for her match with Huang Lingyin today. In order to prevent a repeat of what happened in Sapphire Round 2, Kirino knows that she must use her intelligence and beauty more effectively in order to entice the voters. However, Lingyin will not go down without a fight. Despite having only two wins this season, it is evident that she is not one to give up easily. With the pride of her country on the line, Lingyin is also determined to win this match. With this being said, which fang-tan will you choose today? Will the charm of the middle school model grab your vote, or will the fighting spirit of China's IS representative cadet impress you more? |
Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!) vs. Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
Fresh from her win against Kasugano Sora, the tier-two contestant, Hirasawa Yui, will not stop in her bid to reach the Postseason of ISML. But, standing in her way next is Nagato Yuki, a tier-one behemoth who dispatched her opponent with relative ease in Sapphire Round 3. While Yui needs to increase her pace to snatch one of the last slots in the Postseason, Yuki is on course to become one of the top seeds for the ending fireworks. Logic states that this may be another easy round for the artificial human, created by the Integrated Data Entity, but with the loyal backing from the K-ON! franchise, the lead guitarist and co-vocalist of Houkago Tea Time could upset the apple cart and inflict the second-only defeat of the year for Yuki. As the race for the spots in the Postseason gathers speed, will the Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu fanatics once again serve a win on a silver platter to Nagato Yuki, or will the backing given by K-ON!’s ardent fans allow Hirasawa Yui to pull a rabbit out of her hat and upset the record books? |
Yui (Angel Beats!) vs. Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
The match taking place here is between Yui and Misaka Mikoto. Yui, the pink-haired girl from Girls Dead Monster, is an energetic girl in the Afterlife. Prior to her demise, she had a lot of regrets, as she wasn’t able to fulfill her wishes, especially her wish to get married. Even after a horrific accident paralyzed her from the waist down, no one besides her mother cared for and comforted her during those times of struggle. Her final wish was granted in the Afterlife, allowing her to pass away without any regrets. Mikoto, the chestnut-haired maiden from Tokiwadai Gakuen, is known as Gakuen City’s Railgun. Underneath her ojō-sama façade, she holds a bloody secret: her entire genome was mapped, and as a consequence of that, thousands of her clones were created and subsequently killed mercilessly. Trying in vain to stem the tide of her clones’ massacre, she was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice. In the end, she was saved thanks to the intervention of a certain boy. Which maiden will have gained more happiness, Yui for realising her dreams and wishes, or Misaka Mikoto for protecting the lives of her 9969 clones? |
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!)
One chilly night as the breeze gently sweeps across my cheeks, I see two silhouettes squaring off from across the plains. A cold shiver runs down my spine. The cemetery—such an eerie place for a match to be taking place. Staring at both combatants, it strikes me that the silver-haired maiden, clad in amethyst armour, is the Necromancer from the Underworld—Eucliwood Hellscythe. Her quiet demeanor and taciturn behaviour are testaments to her beauty. Without uttering a word, she swings her death scythe unflinchingly towards her opponent, the purple-haired girl with clear emerald-green eyes—Nakamura Yuri, the leader of SSS. She looks like an energetic and charismatic damsel, which leads me to question why she associates with the graveyard and its horrible atmosphere. Retaliating against Eu with her trusty Beretta 92 pistol and her retractable knife, Yuri seems to fight on par with her opponent. A sudden rustle from the leaves, and I am exposed, watching this horrific encounter. Who will come out on top in this battle, the Necromancer, Eucliwood Hellscythe, or the SSS leader, Nakamura Yuri? |
Haneoka Meimi (Saint Tail) vs. Hōsen Elis (Canvas 2)
Haneoka Meimi appears as an average student in her school; however, she is actually more than just that. At night, she disguises herself as a thief who steals back stolen items and returns them to their original owners. Using her "magical powers," she fools her adversaries using simple tricks and obtains the stolen objects with ease. While Meimi appears to be a villain by the police, she is actually a hero to those whose stolen items are returned to them. Hōsen Elis is a happy-go-lucky schoolgirl. Trauma has made her fear the color red, which reminds her of blood. Even so, she manages to create elaborate drawings, and her friends continue to search for ways to remove her fear so as to allow her artistic ability’s growth in potential. As both of them prepare for the match ahead of them, can Meimi use her acrobatic talent to get the victory today, or will Elis be able to paint her way to triumph? |

Sapphire 5 — 14 July 2011
Victorique de Blois (GOSICK) vs. Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
The doors to the dark and uninviting library slowly open, revealing a room with a long staircase and tons of books. As Sanzen'in Nagi enters, a slight breeze brushes against her cheeks, sending a chill down her spine. Knowing that her opponent awaits her at the top of the winding staircase, Nagi does not want to be seen as a coward who is scared of the dark. With each step, the rich otaku's fears slowly evaporate as light begins to appear. Once near the top, Nagi is overcome with a sense of self-accomplishment, ecstatic about the fact that she has managed to conquer her fear this time around. However, this is just the beginning, because her opponent, Victorique de Blois, the Golden Fairy of the Library, stands poised and ready for combat. In this battle of wits, which one of these blonde-haired maidens will come out on top? Will the Wellspring of Wisdom help Victorique outsmart Nagi, or is her opponent much more intelligent than she expects? |
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!) vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
The weakest have fought. So, too, the strongest. Both times, the soft voice of Hanazawa Kana has had the last laugh. But, no more. Refined by the flames of her Kugyu sister's Nietono no Shana, Taiga's bokken flashes towards her counterpart in the Order of the Lotus ranks: Charlotte Dunois. As classic a HanaKana as Taiga is a Kugimiya Knight, Charlotte's quiet smile is a familiar sight for the Palmtop Tiger, experienced veteran to the IS pilot's rising newcomer. Char's meek, vulnerable demeanor may melt the hearts of many, but Taiga knows the raw power hidden in the orange pendant hanging from her neck, and she has strength of her own to match. Cruel parents forced her away from home, hungry and broken-hearted. Unloved, until a fateful meeting with Ryūji, the most well rounded subject of the Queen of Tsundere understands the pain reflected in the eyes of her opponent. Yet neither gave up, and after a long, hard struggle, both fighters prevailed, freeing themselves from the chains of others' wills. With this freedom at stake, will the short-tempered Tiger, finally discovering her inner dere in the fragments of her fragile heart, show the world the real Palmtop Angel? Or, will the weak-willed cadet, whose friends brought out the courage in her to defy those who dictated her life, shatter that heart with her newfound determination? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!)
Footsteps pad down the dim passageway, reverberating off craggy walls to the SSS leader, snuggled in her hidden niche. The perfect ambush. Alone in her fight against death's injustice, Yuri still has the element of surprise. Alarmingly close, the swish of long hair sings a warning. A swift twist and bullets rain down on the surprised adventurer, saved only by instinct and the impenetrable Masamune. Emerald eyes meet burning hazel. Yuri starts—How did she get the wrong Seitokaichō?—but it's too late. Hinagiku's sword carves air, skillfully closing the distance between them. Yuri's pale green ribbon flutters to the ground, still clinging to strands of deepest purple as the pulsing blade dances, lighting up the cavern, painting the flurry of slashes and parries across the walls: a shadow duel in the depths of the Guild. Yuri ducks back into the safety of darkness, preparing for the next onslaught. But Masamune lowers, dimming ever so slightly. The dull glow floats towards the shadows. Yurippe, come back to school. The gentle voice of the dutiful President is met with quick warning shots. Her soft sigh, as if of regret that things had gotten so out of hand, is met with the cry of a girl who braved far more pain than she. Bracing herself for a tough fight, Hinagiku's hands shift back into position. Light flares. |
Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!)
Temporary member of ENOZ, Suzumiya Haruhi, takes on the lead singer and guitarist of Hōkago Tea Time, Hirasawa Yui, in a rock showdown. Carefree and optimistic, Yui always gives 100% whenever she is on a grand stage. Although she is an airhead and cares much about sweets, she always makes sure that the members of her club have fun and laugh with her at her bland jokes. Unlike Yui, Haruhi has never picked up a guitar before, but learned it swiftly when she heard that some of the members of the band were sick. Walking on stage in a bunny suit, Haruhi excited the crowd as she played along with the band. While Yui has been in many concerts before, this will be the second time that Haruhi will have to perform live in front of the voters. When the curtains rise and the bands play on stage, which group will tear the roof by the time this clash is over? |
Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto)
The ISML match-ups would not be complete without their eye-candy. Sapphire Round 5's ‘pleasing-to-the-eye’ fixture takes shape in the form of Shinonono Hōki and Aragaki Ayase. Both maidens boast unquestionable beauty—dreamy eyes; long, silky hair; and curvaceous figures—which means that they can capture the hearts of any guy they wish. Most men would give anything to spend some precious time with either of these beautiful girls, but the similarities between Hōki and Ayase end there. To capture Hōki’s heart, one has to endure her frequent outbursts and mood swings, both physically and mentally, as she’s a stereotypical tsundere. On the other hand, conquering Ayase is a tad more difficult as she is a yandere, one who seems nice and caring on the outside, but is dangerous if displeased with her love interest. Which archetypical girl will be favoured by the voters today—a tsundere, as depicted by Shinonono Hōki, or a yandere, like Aragaki Ayase? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Kuroi Mato (Black ★ Rock Shooter)
Newcomer Kuroi Mato has been doing very well as she is still undefeated this period. However, how long will that position last once she faces veteran Nagato Yuki? Both of them are already used to traversing parallel worlds. Yuki is able to contact those on the other side of the world via the computer, and has helped save her friends during unusual events. At one point, she used her own power to alter her current world, changing herself into a quiet, shy girl. Mato has moved in between worlds on countless occasions. At one point, she is a normal, middle school girl playing basketball and going to school with her friends, and at another point, she's in a world where the only form of reasoning is fighting to the death. As these two warriors prepare to fight, will Yuki's intelligence be enough to pick up a win, or will Mato's rock shooter bring her one step closer to the necklace? |
Saber (Fate/stay night) vs. Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky ☆ Star)
The Sapphire Period is now more than half finished, and these two girls need to work very hard if they wish to make it into the Postseason once more. The gallant Saber seems to be at level ground, currently ranking at 15th. However, there is still a long way to go until the Regular Season is over, and Saber needs to guard her post if she wants to be back in the finals. On the contrary, the cautious Hiiragi Kagami must step up to the plate. More than ten spots away from the borderline of the Top Sixteen, Kagami needs to buckle down and make up for her lost time and effort. Before the season’s halfway mark ends, can Kagami get back on her feet and win enough matches to get back on top, or will Saber take the initiative to knock her opponent down for her own sake? |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Yui (Angel Beats!)
After managing to defeat the 2010 Tiara bearer, Akiyama Mio, by 23 votes in Sapphire Round 4, Gokō Ruri is now riding a huge wave of momentum heading into round 5. With the win, Kuroneko jumps ahead of Mio in the overall standings, placing herself with the likes of Eucliwood Hellscythe and Tachibana Kanade as the top newcomers this season. Her opponent, Yui, on the other hand, suffered a devastating loss in the same round at the hands of Misaka Mikoto, who is currently undefeated. Because of this, Yui knows that she must work hard to win this battle in order to keep her spot in the Top 16. As the Black Cat squares off against the lead vocalist and guitarist of Girls Dead Monster, which one of them will emerge victorious? Will Kuroneko's verbal insults spell the end for Yui, or will her opponent's physical assaults be too much for her to handle? |
Shiina (Angel Beats!) vs. Shirai Kuroko (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
Despite being defeated by Holo, Shiina continues on to her upcoming opponent. Opening the door to her next match, many nails strike at her, all of which she successfully avoids. A voice from behind surprises the dark-haired fighter, and there stands a girl with twin-tails, wearing an unknown school uniform and a green armband. Shiina responds to the battle challenge of Shirai Kuroko, and tries to attack her rival with her two short swords, but misses. Kuroko teleports behind her, but Shiina quickly turns to intercept the attack. As these two girls clash their weapons against each other, who will claim victory tonight? |
Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!) vs. Holo (Spice and Wolf)
After an unusual string of losses, Holo managed to break free after a close, yet decisive, victory against Shiina. The wise wolf can now use this victory as momentum, as she hopes to never be in that position once again. Holo wishes to continue on winning her matches, and her next bout is against none other than pianist Kotobuki Tsumugi. Not doing as well as her other K-ON! friends, Tsumugi is set on giving everything she has in this match. Of course, tea and cake will go very well after a victory. With both members driving to win more matches, can Holo overcome her opponent with her wisdom, or will Tsumugi be able to play a song of triumph after the match is over? |
Narusegawa Naru (Love Hina) vs. Arurū (Utawarerumono)
ISML is not only about the contestants who manage to enter the Regular Season. Some of the old names might have faded away from fans’ memories, like Narusegawa Naru from Love Hina. Some fans proclaim that she is the original tsundere. Her first meeting with Keitaro shaped their destiny. The promise between herself, Mutsumi, and Keitaro was fulfilled sixteen years later. She felt insecure with Keitaro’s ‘flirtations’ with the other tenants of Hinata Sō. Subsequent punishments rained down upon him when she found him in uncompromising situations with other girls. Standing up against her is Arurū from Utawarerumono. Contrary to her opponent, she is a shy and quiet younger sister. During her first encounter with Hakōro, she projected shyness and recalcitrance, running away and hiding from him at every possible chance. In the end, she warmed up to Hakōro when he spared the life of a baby white tiger, even though its mother had killed many innocent people and most of the townsfolk wanted the cub killed. Which one of these exhibition maidens will garner more votes during Sapphire Round 5—Narusegawa Naru, or Arurū? |

Sapphire 6 — 17 July 2011
Holo (Spice and Wolf) vs. Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
As the leaves wither, so will the lives of normal people. Spending an eternity in solitude tends to make even the most brave-hearted succumb to their own loneliness. As the sands of time trickle slowly, again, so will the lives of mere mortals. The joy of meeting loved ones, the trials and tribulations they share with companions, and the pain in losing those same companions are locked within their tiny chests. They shun mortals, as they cannot bear the pain of separation. For these divine beings, the lifetimes of their friends end in just a blink of their eyes. Knowing that they cannot fall in love due to the differences between them and their loved ones, even their inner strengths slowly erode, as the clock ticks. As mere mortals, we cannot fathom their endless despair and yearning for reciprocated love. Many take for granted the meaning of these shallow words—love and happiness—but they mean the world to both Holo and Eucliwood Hellscythe. Which maiden’s plight needs curing first: the Wise Wolf of Yoitsu, or the Necromancer of the Underworld? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Shiina (Angel Beats!)
Popular among all students, Hakuō Academy's student council president, Katsura Hinagiku, confronts the SSS's self-proclaimed female ninja, Shiina. Having once held the Heavenly Tiara, Hina knows the ISML extremely well, with this being her 4th year of participation. Shiina, on the other hand, is engaging in her first year of competition and has not been able to match the results of the other Angel Beats! characters. Because of this, many competitors underestimate this silent warrior. Will Hina become a victim of the speed and skills of the ninja, or will the Seitokai president continue to climb towards the Heavenly Tiara once again? |
Saber (Fate/stay night) vs. Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
The vision of Avalon, the utopia for her people, was the driving force for Saber to join the battle for the Holy Grail. Embodying the virtues of a true warrior and nobleman, the heroic spirit aims to correct what went wrong during her short reign as Arturia Pendragon. Her sword, Excalibur, lost its scabbard, and with it, her immortality. Yet, she strove her hardest to lead her fragmented country beset by war from the outside and treachery from the inside. Salvation was all that she wished for during her final moments. On the other hand, Misaka Mikoto is often gripped by haunting nightmares—the visions of her clones dripping in blood as they are mercilessly killed. The Electromaster was tricked into the mapping of her entire DNA genome. She watched helplessly the massacre taking place in Gakuen City, as her efforts to stop her clones’ deaths were all in vain. New research centres opened as she destroyed the old ones. Gritting her teeth, she decided to stand against a cold-blooded murderer and end her nightmares, one way or another. Who will emerge victorious as Excalibur clashes with lightning—the heroic spirit of Saber, or Misaka Mikoto, the Railgun? |
Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
Now, it's Kōsaka Kirino's turn. After her close friend, Gōko Ruri, defeated Akiyama Mio in Sapphire Round 4, Kirino finds herself with a chance to prove that she can do better than a 23-vote win. However, the task is daunting since she is not only up against a Top 16 opponent, but the 2010 Tiara bearer herself. Even with her strength decreasing, Mio still managed to bounce back in Sapphire Round 5 by obtaining 66% of the votes in her match against Index. With this in mind, Kirino knows she must do everything she can in order to emerge from Round 6 with a victory. As Hōkago Tea Time's bassist goes up against the middle school model, which one of these maidens will secure a victory today? Will Mio's rhythmic bass mesmerize Kirino, or will her opponent's eroge embarrass her into submission? |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
vs. Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Two unique-looking tsunderes go head-to-head today as Sanzen'in Nagi takes on Shinonono Hōki. Nagi, who has lived a carefree life ever since birth, has been doing decently in ISML despite not having any new anime material for quite some time. This blond, twin-tail 's resilience has allowed her a chance to make it into the Postseason. Her opponent, however, experienced many hardships as a child. Because of her male-like strength, Hōki was constantly a victim of verbal abuse. It was only with Ichika's help that she managed to overcome it. Her first season in the ISML is no different. She currently has only two wins and would like nothing more than to win once more today. In the end, which one of these tsunderes will emerge victorious? Will Nagi's overwhelming intelligence be her key to victory, or will Hōki's strength be too much for Nagi to handle? |
Victorique de Blois (GOSICK) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
With only a few rounds left in the Sapphire period, every win counts. But every loss counts just as much for those who are closest to the necklace. Following GOSICK's finale, a sudden rise in popularity has Victorique de Blois sitting comfortably in second place for Sapphire. The Gray Wolf remains undefeated for the period, and she knows from personal experience that to stay alive, she must keep demonstrating her abilities. However, her opponent today is none other than Shana, who is not only one of the most powerful Flame Hazes, but also one of the strongest contestants in ISML. Shana has already won the Sapphire necklace twice, and looks to add a third to her collection this year. Winning this match could give her the extra boost she needs to defend her necklace, yet an upset by Victorique could be her demise. The stakes are high and losing now will have devastating consequences for both contestants. |
Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD) vs. Konjiki no Yami (To LOVE-Ru)
In Aquamarine Round 3, Konjiki no Yami defeated Furukawa Nagisa, completing her revenge for her loss to her last year. Now, Fujibayashi Kyō challenges the Golden Darkness for her fallen comrade. With her fiery personality and never-say-die attitude, Kyō is ready to face off any challenge that lies ahead of her, but is it enough to fend off her opponent? Thanks to nanotechnology, Konjiki no Yami was given the ability to alter any part of her body and turn it into a weapon. With her assassination skills, Konjiki no Yami is surely somebody one should think twice about fighting alone. However, Kyō has gone through many challenges, and this one will make her match that much more interesting. Which of these two girls will come out the victor by the time everything is said and done? |
Kasugano Sora (Yosuga no Sora) vs. Iwasawa Asami (Angel Beats!)
Everything seems to crumble for Kasugano Sora. Weak in body, she was robbed of her childhood. To compound her misery, the sudden passing of her parents shattered her fragile heart. With nowhere to go, she clings to her twin brother, the last ray of hope and warmth. While her personality may be the least desirable, it is to cover her heart, which has been scarred numerous times. Finally able to gain that tiny bit of happiness, she can now move on, forging her new future. As for Iwasawa Asami, her life, too, has not been smooth sailing. Constant bickering between her parents lead to her trying to escape the crumbling household. She found solace and remedy in music, a far cry from the noises of her parents’ heated arguments. She later died from a head injury that she received during one of these violent fights. In the Afterlife, she fulfilled what she couldn’t manage when alive, and finally was able to pass away without any lingering regret. Will the sad tale of Sora sway the voters’ hearts, or will the tragic story of Asami get the nod instead? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Sakagami Tomoyo (CLANNAD)
The strongest of their represented series will battle in what should be an epic bout. Their first match began in Amethyst Round 2 in 2008 where both competitors were tied, but Tomoyo would obtain the victory via overtime. In Topaz Round 9 in 2009, these two warriors fought once more, this time resulting in Yuki's victory by a mere 66 votes. Last year, during Topaz Round 1, Yuki would defeat Tomoyo once more by a larger margin, but the match was relatively close nonetheless. With the score between them 2-1, Tomoyo is looking to even out the score once more, but can she do so? With the CLANNAD fanbase still diminishing due to lack of new material and the Disappearance movie still fresh in the voters' minds, it is going to take more than brute strength and careful thinking to walk out of this mess with a victory in hand. With the power of the ocean in the palm of her hand, can Tomoyo surf her way to victory, or will she hang in balance between the sun and the moon in Yuki's hands? |
Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!)
Despite the fact that this ISML season is the first for both of these young ladies, their experiences thus far could not be anymore different. Currently sitting at last place, Laura Bodewig has yet to pick up her first ISML win. Even with the massive strength of her IS, Lady Luck has not been on Laura's side. However, maybe things will change today. Although her opponent, Nakamura Yuri, is currently in the Top 16, a two-game losing streak has severely lowered the SSS leader's confidence. But don't count her out just yet, since Yuri is known for not giving up even amidst the toughest situation. As the seemingly lopsided battle heats up, which side will be left standing? Will Laura's Schwarzer Regen help her claim a victory today, or will the bullets from her opponent’s Beretta 92 pistol subdue her? |
Asahina Mikuru (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto)
Asahina Mikuru is a bubbly and carefree girl. Mikuru always responds in a merry tone, and is very careful about what she says to people. Sometimes, events either force her to dress in revealing costumes against her will, or place her in scary environments echoing with her cute squeals. Overall, she always has fun with her friends, no matter how odd the situation may be. However, the same cannot be said about Aragaki Ayase. Ayase pictures herself in ideal surroundings and implements those ideas in real life. Anything remotely wrong about her life reflects in her silent rage until the situation is deemed "fixed" in her mind. Even so, she does all of this because she cares about her friends and wishes the best for them. When these two girls collide, can Ayase push her opponent away as far as possible, or is Mikuru's beam enough to shatter her opponent’s heart? |
Celty Sturluson (Durarara!!) vs. Tomoe Mami (Puella Magi Madoka ☆ Magica)
A maiden rides the city on a motorcycle, making sure that operations run smoothly. When she finds something that she deems unjust, she takes the initiative and brings justice down on those who are in the wrong. Those who fight back only end up cowering in fear at the sight of the one nicknamed "The Headless Rider." One swing of her hidden power is all it takes to knock a man unconscious. A schoolgirl walks alone in the darkest of nights. When her sacred gem glows, it signals trouble around the corner. She hops into a parallel world where a witch lies waiting for its next target. While these witches are dangerous and strong, they are no matches for "The Golden Maiden." One shot is all it takes to strike those creatures down. What will happen if these two soldiers of darkness happen to pass by each other as they continue to patrol the streets at night? |

Sapphire 7 — 19 July 2011
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Nakano Azusa (K-ON!)
Shana: a veteran who has written many pages in the history books of ISML. She is the most decorated competitor, holding the Aquamarine necklace in 2008, Emerald and Diamond in 2010, and the Sapphire necklace in 2009 and 2010. She holds the second longest winning streak and is one of the most dominating figures in moe history, despite not having any material made for her since her latest OVA. Her wins in Korea Super Best Moe from 2006-2007 show how prominent she truly is, but with fresh newcomers on the rise to fame, such as her opponent today, Nakano Azusa, can Shana catch up? Last year, in the Anime Saimoe Tournament, Azusa defeated Sanzen'in Nagi to become the Champion. While Azusa may have a title, she does not have a necklace, yet. Today, opportunity could certainly knock on her door. Can Azusa capitalize upon her AST trophy and defeat her opponent, or will Shana come out victorious and be on her way to retain the Sapphire Necklace for another year? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!)
This life form calls any form of emotion a "bug" in her system. She wishes to communicate and react normally with other people, yet is unable to do so. Altering a world does nothing to a heart that simply wishes to change. The other is a spirit whose purpose is to find the one who saved her before her last breath. Until she finds that person, she can do nothing more but monitor the world she is in, taking the role of making her new surroundings a "better" place. She may find herself in brawls, possibly wars, but if it is to see her savior once more, then she will do anything for that chance. They are nothing more than caged birds, bound by their own wishes, unable to break free. Upon trying, all they do is hurt those around them, especially ones for whom they care. Will there come a time when their hearts can truly be at peace? The strength of others is what is needed, but whom will they save first: an alien, or an angel? |
Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!) vs. Shiina (Angel Beats!)
These two young ladies who are different in every way, both physically and mentally, share the same pains and struggles when it comes to ISML results. For Kotobuki Tsumugi, a surprisingly dismal record of 7-20 puts her well behind the rest of the main K-ON! cast, with the closest to her being Hirasawa Yui, who owns a 16-11 record. Similarly, Shiina's 1-25 record, when compared to Yuri's 20-7 record, is a tough pill to swallow for the SSS's self-proclaimed ninja. However, only one of them can have her wish granted. With the winner of this match able to take one step forward while the loser falls even further back, both girls put their determination to the test as the battle begins. The power to alter the outcome of this battle is in your hands. |
Akiyama Mio (K-ON!) vs. Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
Barely eight months ago, Akiyama Mio and Misaka Mikoto met in ISML 2010, battling for the coveted Heavenly Tiara. Backed by ardent K-ON! fans, as well as the internet meme, 'moe moe kyun!', Akiyama Mio emerged victorious. Losing by a vote differential of two thousand was a shattering defeat, a bitter pill to swallow for Mikoto. Never in the three years of ISML has the losing finalist been totally overpowered by her conqueror. A spin-off anime, while managing to propel the Railgun from being a lightweight contestant in ISML, didn’t give her enough ammunition to beat the bassist from Hōkago Tea Time. Fast-forward to ISML 2011, and that massive chasm of strength between these two girls has suddenly evaporated. With the introduction of the second season of Index, the Electromaster seems to have turned the tables against the left-handed Fender Bassist. Currently boasting a perfect score in the Regular Season, Mikoto is currently at the top of the leaderboard, while Mio is ranked eighth, with an aggregate score of twenty-four wins to three losses after Sapphire Round 6. So, will the fourth meeting between these two goliaths mirror the first three encounters between them, which Mio won, or will Mikoto achieve her first win in this match up? |
Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
vs. Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
France against Japan, fan-favorite against tsundere, Charlotte Dunois against Shinonono Hōki. As this intra-series battle gets underway, it is evident that both of these IS pilots want to win—not only to climb in the standings, but also to impress their love interest. Charlotte's kind and caring personality is arguably the reason for her success, as she is still in the Top 16 despite slowly dropping in the standings. France's IS representative cadet is currently the only IS <Infinite Stratos> character to have success thus far, sitting at 12th, while her opponent, Hōki, is behind her at 45th. Even though everything looks grim, this tsundere should not be counted out just yet, as Hōki's determination and grit is something you don't see everyday. As the dust settles in this IS clash, which country's pilot will remain standing? |
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
vs. Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
As the Sapphire phase draws to an end, the voters again are treated to intra tier-one match ups. The statistically weakest tier-one contestant, Eucliwood Hellscythe, has been paired with Katsura Hinagiku , a girl who is ranked as a wildcard. With three previous necklaces already grabbed by the awesome trio of Misaka Mikoto, Tachibana Kanade, and Nagato Yuki, it can be argued that obtaining the Sapphire necklace should be easier. With both maidens currently holding perfect scores of six wins in the Sapphire Period, they are considered strong contenders for the Sapphire necklace. With identically low SDO, Eu and Hina are neck to neck in the current period, with Eucliwood ranked slightly higher due to her slightly superior vote differential. The winning maiden will surely enter the necklace round, but the vanquished girl’s hope to attain the Sapphire necklace will be dealt a severe blow. As the death scythe and bokken clash, which weapon will emerge victorious? |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Furukawa Nagisa (CLANNAD)
Experience doesn't always increase the likelihood of success. This is something Furukawa Nagisa knows extremely well as she participates in her fourth ISML season having never reached the Top 16. It may seem to many that time has finally caught up with the Dango Daikazoku fanatic, since she currently sits at 27th—her lowest position since 2008, when she finished 22nd. Despite the odds, Nagisa is a hard worker who always strives to do her best, even when things seem impossible. Gokō Ruri, on the other hand, is doing surprisingly well, fresh off a win in Sapphire 4 against the 2010 Tiara bearer, Akiyama Mio, despite this being her first year of competition. Currently sitting at 6th place, Kuroneko is definitely a contender for this year's battle for the Heavenly Tiara. So, as the newcomer goes up against the veteran, whom will the voters favor? Will the self-proclaimed fallen angel claim victory today, or will Nagisa prove that she still has some fight left in her? |
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!) vs. Konjiki no Yami (To LOVE-ru)
Cute, petite, and adorable are three words that can describe the physical attributes of both Aisaka Taiga and Konjiki no Yami. A further comparison can be made of the secrets that they would rather keep to themselves. A crumbling household led Taiga to develop a troublesome attitude towards others. This chestnut-haired maiden snaps at others if they dare to incur her wrath. Her athletic body, coupled with her trusted bokken, can inflict grievous wounds to others during these numerous fits of ‘insanity’. Created as an intergalactic assassin, Yami also has problems interacting with people, as encounters with others might hinder her given missions. This golden-haired girl either lurks in the shadows, waiting for the perfect time to execute her missions, or sits in the library, reading books. Inwardly enhanced with nano-machines, almost every part of her body can be turned into a deadly weapon. As the Palmtop Tiger clashes with the Golden Darkness, which one of these petite girls will reign supreme? |
Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD) vs. Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto)
Two archetypal characters square off against each other as Fujibayashi Kyō, the tsundere, takes on Aragaki Ayase, the yandere. Hot-tempered and strict, Kyō never hesitates to assault people who anger her by throwing a dictionary at them. However, underneath this strong front, Kyō faces many struggles that weaken her, especially those that deal with love. As for Ayase, she constantly goes out of her way to help her loved ones. Similarly, behind this caring front lies a dangerous personality, one that can potentially hurt others. The choice now is up to you. Which archetype do you prefer: tsundere or yandere? |
Holo (Spice and Wolf) vs. Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Laura Bodewig may have the chance of a lifetime. With Holo sinking lower than her fans could ever imagine, can Laura finally obtain her first victory by defeating the Wise Wolf? The Schwarzer Hase waits for a time to overcome any opponent in sight, and this one may contribute a victory to Laura. All Laura has to do is point her gun and pull the trigger. However, Holo will not make it seem so easy. She has lived for so long and been through multiple tournaments that she has much to gain and too much to lose in this match. She must stand her ground and prove to Laura why she was the 2008 KBM champion. Holo walks forward with a smile on her face, thinking of a plan as she approaches the large mechanical toy known as the Schwarzer Regen. |
Enma Ai (Jigōku Shōjo) vs. Sōryū Asuka Langley (Neon Genesis Evanglion)
Death of a loved one. Seeing multiple people die from the arrogance of humans. Death of one's own heart and mind, the inability to go on with one’s own thoughts drowning the body. Is there any more anguish that these two girls have to suffer through until life is satisfied toying with their minds? Enma Ai's job is to ship those who make a contract with her to hell, along with the one whom he or she cursed, but even a job like that can make one agonize and go mad. Even she wishes to rebel against the one who granted her immortality to perform this task; however, if she does, she will perish. Sōryū Asuka Langley plays an arrogant attitude because she does not wish to reveal her insecurities and lost feelings. While her words may be harsh, her heart and mind are just as delicate. A fatal mistake or accident will lead to her depression and demise. Sadly, only one of them will be free from her plight, but who? |

The Sapphire necklace is said to hold the power of earth. This strength can cause terrible eruptions and devastating fissures. However, physical strength is meaningless; true strength comes from one's heart. To acquire the necklace, one must be strong-willed and willing to sacrifice oneself to save another. With a single push, Gokō Ruri made friends and found love. Katsura Hinagiku defended others and was able to overcome her fear. Layaknya guncangan bumi yang sedang mencari tumpuannya, gadis manakah yang mampu membuat bumi tertunduk padanya? |

To sing about filling the empty loneliness within one’s heart when finally understanding true love. To sing not just to fans, but to oneself to overcome the fear of invisibility to others. To sing, not to become a better musician, but to change oneself for the better. To sing to express oneself in a new life, repenting for all the wrong done onto others. To sing a story of one's life filled with two unequivocal choices and to choose which road to take. To sing for love and peace, for no conflict between races, no need of war. To sing so magnificently that one would believe the heavens had parted and brought down a angel. To this day, the song has been one of the most expressive forms of human communication. Only one can walk away as the lead vocalist among this group of talented singers. Let the music begin! Teaching is considered one of the noblest professions. Usually, it invokes images of parent-teacher meetings, test checking, note taking of students' grades, and of keeping those same students from running in the hallways. But, if the ladies in today's exhibition match are any indication, teaching can also be a fun job. Tsukuyomi Komoe may have a childlike physique, but is full of adult wisdom and habits. Yamanaka Sawako is a kind teacher and adviser to her students, who can also play killer riffs on a guitar. Kuroi Nanako cares about the well-being of her students and also happens to love playing MMORPGs. Tanizaki Yukari offers a carefree and fun air in the classroom, but happens to be a dangerous driver. Rebecca Miyamoto is a child prodigy who teaches students that are older than her. Fujimura Taiga may be short-tempered and quick-witted, but is dedicated in making sure that her students are well inside and outside of school life. Katsura Yukiji manages to make homeroom interesting for her students and cares deeply for her little sister, despite being a bottle fairy. Who among these teachers will be given the A+ mark? Let the voters decide! |
