Ichika might be clueless when it comes to love, but neither of his childhood friends are nearly so oblivious. Will the bright smile of the cheeky fang-tan prove there's far more to this challenger than meets the eye? Or, will Hōki's graceful beauty steal the show? |
Yui (Angel Beats!) vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD)
Both Yui and Fujibayashi Kyō know how to cause pain. Lots of it, to be exact. Whether it be performing a German suplex or throwing a dictionary, these two girls do not show any mercy in their assaults. But under these violent fronts are two, suffering prisoners, waiting to be freed. For Yui, a childhood of paralysis robbed her of the simple joys in life, from playing the guitar and singing, to playing baseball. Kyō, on the other hand, struggles with love, not knowing whether to help her sister or help herself. In the end, these two girls managed to solve their problems and find peace. So, today, which one of them will gain favor in your eyes? Will Yui's high energy grab your vote, or does a tsundere like Kyō interest you more? |
Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!) vs. Kuroi Mato (Black ★ Rock Shooter)
The opening round of the Emerald Period couldn’t be any harder for Kuroi Mato. Standing before her is another member of the HanaKana faction: Tachibana Kanade. The young basketball player’s record in ISML 2011 is currently 11 wins and 17 losses from the 28 matches she has endured since the Regular Season began. On the other hand, boosted by an immaculate score of 28 wins, the quiet Tenshi is currently neck-to-neck with Misaka Mikoto in the race for the Heavenly Tiara. This match theoretically pits the strongest against the weakest members from the HanaKana faction. So, will the cheerful Mato receive the same treatment from the unassuming Kanade, and get blown into smithereens by her much-fabled Hand-Sonic move, or will she manage to spring a surprise, and claim the scalp of her much more heralded opponent instead? |
Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Shiina (Angel Beats!)
In the Emerald Period’s opening bout, we witness a pair of ninjas squaring off against each other. The vampire ninja, Seraphim, hasn’t been doing well enough to emulate her companion, Eucliwood Hellscythe. This same scenario mirrors the fate of Shiina, as she’s lagging behind the other members from Angel Beats! With only two wins under her belt, Seraphim’s chance to enter the Postseason has all but evaporated. The solitary win for Shiina also means that she can forget about entering the Postseason. But, this will not dim their spirits, as a win for any one of them will be the perfect tonic, as well as help them climb the leader board. As the bokken clash, which one of these two ninjas will emerge victorious? Will Seraphim be able to chalk up her third win in the Regular Season, or will Shiina manage to collect her second win, instead? |
Senjōgahara Hitagi (Bakemonogatari) vs. Holo (Spice and Wolf)
Knowledge is power, and these two know how to put their knowledge to good use. Senjōgahara Hitagi always makes sure that she keeps her profile low so that no one discovers her secret. If anyone finds out, she immediately contacts the person when he or she is alone. Failing to heed her words may cause physiological damage, but she is willing to go that far to hide her own insecurities. Having lived several hundred years, it is no wonder that some people call Holo the “Wise Wolf." She seems to know the tricks of various trades, providing her a way of giving advice without the receiver knowing it. As shrewd as Holo may be, even someone of her caliber looks for someone to fill the loneliness within her heart. It is going to take more than intelligence to get out of this one alive. When everything is settled, which of these two girls will come out on top? |
Last Order (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!)
There I was, resting underneath the maple tree, hoping for some respite from the troubles burdening me. As I scanned the horizon, I caught a glimpse of a girl clad in a nifty half skirt, her hazel eyes filled with hopes and dreams. Joyfully, she played several pranks on a guy with white hair. It seemed like she had no care in the world and that all she wanted to do was have fun all day long. As the guy meekly retaliated, I heard him utter the name, “Last Order,” to the girl—what kind of name is that? As the pair left, my gaze fixated on another peculiar couple. While the guy looked like a delinquent, his companion could be described as a painting. As the wind rustled through the maiden’s long, silky hair, it swayed gently. Captivated, I couldn’t help but stare at the girl. But suddenly, out of nowhere, I heard the guy scream out her name in pain as the girl hit him with a bokken—“Aisaka Taiga.” As I continued to rest, my mind wondered, if given the choice of which girl would fit me better, would it be Last Order or Aisaka Taiga... |
Shiina Mafuyu (Seitokai no Ichizon) vs. Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!)
Sapphire was better. But, not much better. After dismal 1-6 Topaz and Amethyst Periods, Shiina Mafuyu only managed to squeeze out a 2-5 record for Sapphire. With Emerald now starting, this is her chance to replicate the result of a successful Aquamarine period where she went 4-3. However, the lack of new material will not make it easy for her. HIrasawa Yui, on the other hand, has strung together three consecutive winning periods, going 4-3 in each one of them. Although she is five places away from a spot in the Postseason, Yui is determined to make the Emerald Period a successful one. At the conclusion of this battle between an avid gamer and a sweets addict, which one of these girls will prove to be more moe? |
Victorique de Blois (GOSICK) vs. Saber (Fate/stay night)
With just two more periods to go, the race to the Top 16 heightens for girls near the borderline. Currently at #18, Victorique de Blois looks to have another bountiful period in Emerald after an impressive run in Sapphire. As long as Victorique continues to pace herself like this, she may very likely obtain a spot up there when everything is said and done. Hopefully, that does not mean that Saber will have to lose her spot just to let her in. At a shaky area of #15, Saber hopes to remain on top until the Regular Season is over. Any simple mistake that she makes may jeopardize her chances of returning to the Postseason once more. With multiple contestants eager to take Saber's place, it is up to her to defend her spot until the end. Can the one who wields the sword make her way to the Postseason once more, or will the one who controls the Wellspring of Wisdom find her way and make it to the top? |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto)
Another battle between a Kugimiya Knight and a member of the HanaKana faction will take place today as Sanze'nin Nagi and Gokō Ruri square off against each other. After a mediocre Sapphire Period, where she went 3-4, Nagi hopes to bounce back with a win today in the first round of Emerald. However, her opponent is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Currently sitting comfortably at 6th, Kuroneko had just come off a spectacular Sapphire Period, where she managed to defeat 2010 Heavenly Tiara bearer, Akiyama Mio. Will this momentum carry into Emerald, allowing her to cruise past Nagi, or will the blond twin-tail emerge with another win for the Kugimiya Knights? |
Sakagami Tomoyo (CLANNAD) vs. Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
It's the long-awaited battle between two of the most popular Seitokai presidents in the anime world: Sakagami Tomoyo and Katsura Hinagiku. Both of these successful girls have now been in ISML for four years, with each girl claiming superiority over the other in two of these years. Tomoyo was at her peak in ISML 2008 and 2009, posting a 118-8 record in that span. On the other hand, after winning the Heavenly Tiara in 2009, Hina has dominated Tomoyo in ISML 2010 and, now, 2011, obtaining 71 wins in comparison to Tomoyo's 59. With the possible end to Tomoyo's ISML career coming nearer and nearer, will Emerald be her opportunity to win one more necklace before she bows out? Or, will Hina show that she is the superior Seitokai president by walking out of Emerald Round 1 with a convincing victory? |
Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
Kōsaka Kirino and Sengoku Nadeko compete in what should be a high-paced match. With Kirino’s high grades, great athletic ability, and work as a model, it is hard to guess that she also plays eroge in her spare time. Kirino feared that she would lose her friends if they were to learn about her dirty, little secret. Even so, she managed to hang on to those who are dear to her and who are willing to support her, despite her taste. In contrast, Nadeko is a shy and soft-spoken girl, who usually stops herself before she says what is on her mind. While she attempts to show her strong will, she still needs someone beside her whenever she is down and in dire need of help. When things cannot get any worse, Nadeko is the first to try to cheer everyone up, even if her jokes are not funny. Which of these two girls will the voters prefer to have as their "little sister?" |
Kinomoto Sakura (Cardcaptor Sakura) vs. Sakurazaki Setsuna (Mahō Sensei Negima!)
The will to protect something that is cherished dearly. So strong is that feeling that she will charter through multiple worlds, reach down to the depths of the underworld, and even go as far as sacrificing her own life just to protect that special someone and what she believes is right. It does not matter what is in front of her. Climbing an obstacle greater than herself and achieving victory is worth nothing if she fails to protect those in need of it. To have those people in her arms, to see those people smile, is priceless. That is the true treasure. This is not her duty; she chose to take this path, even if it consists of seeing many people suffer before her eyes. A magical girl. A half-demon. Everything will be all right. She speaks those magical words to herself and soars... |

Emerald 2 — 2 August 2011
Iwasawa Asami (Angel Beats!) vs. Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!)
As she watches her audience part like the sea for their Student Council President, she knows that unless she does something quick, the mission is a failure. With their best songs sung, and their climax interrupted, there looks to be no way out for GirlDeMo, no way to recapture that single moment of complete unity, no way to recapture that single-minded immersion in the music. No protest, nor plea, can distract the dutiful Seitokaichō from her given task: to re-instill order to the students of Afterlife High School. Those are the rules that she is bound by, and her responsibility and integrity refuses disobedience, even if it means silencing the Crow's Song. But as Tachibana Kanade reaches for the slender neck of the guitar, a gentle hand wraps itself lovingly across the fingerboard, cradling it as if it were her baby; nimble fingers dance across the strings, and the soft voice of the pink-haired lead singer weaves its way throughout the school. There's more than one way to triumph over the injustice of life and death, and none know better than Iwasawa Asami. |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto)
When you can obtain or achieve anything you want in life, you know that you're lucky. Such is the case for Sanzen'in Nagi and Kōsaka Kirino. Rich beyond imagination, Nagi has no problems obtaining any materialistic possession that she desires. With tons of money to spare, the life of this rich otaku sure is easy. On the other hand, Kirino's ability to achieve great success in areas like academics, athletics, and beauty make her seem like the perfect person. On top of all that, she is amazingly able to juggle a part-time modeling job as well. But today, neither money, nor talents, will come into play. With both girls standing on level ground, it is up to the voters to decide the winner of this battle between tsundere. When the dust finally settles, which one of these girls will emerge triumphant? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Hirasawa Ui (K-ON!)
Having to look after an unreliable older sister is tough, something that both Katsura Hinagiku and Hirasawa Ui can attest to. Learning to deal with the problems that their older siblings bring has helped these two girls mature over time. Though there may be times of troubles and struggles, both Hina and Ui have managed to overcome them so far, and now stand before each other today. Even if the routes they have taken are different, both of them can definitely agree on one thing: without the continuing support of their sisters, they may not have been able to make it this far. As the two of them square off for battle, both are determined to show just how much family means to them. The question now is, whose fiery passion will burn brighter? |
Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto ) vs. Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
Keeping a graceful social outlook is a must for most girls. Both Aragaki Ayase and Misaka Mikoto aren’t any different. Projecting an image of an honour student—good in academics and working as a part-time model—taught Ayase the path she honestly feels she must follow. She wants her circle of friends to lead the lives she envisions, sometimes much to their chagrin. On the other hand, attending Tokiwadai Middle School has given Mikoto an ‘ojōsama’ vibe. As the model student in the land of the ojōsamas’, this maiden should be the perfect lady—at least that’s what the surrounding people would deduce. Instead, tucked underneath is an un-ladylike girl, hotheaded and headstrong. Very little can separate these two beauties in the outsider’s point of view, but underneath everything, will the honest projection from Aragaki Ayase sway her voters, or will the assumed outlook of Misaka Mikoto have a stronger pulling power? |
Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
vs. Index L. Prohibitorum (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
From afar, Charlotte Dunois and Index L. Prohibitorum look like ordinary girls. Sweet, cheerful, easygoing, as well as love-struck, the lives of these two maidens may look perfect to onlookers. But, only a handful of people know the truth about these two bubbly girls. After her mother’s death, Charlotte’s hope of living peacefully in the countryside of France was shattered. To compound her problem, she was then sent to Japan as a secret ploy by her father’s company, under the pretext of being the second, male IS pilot in the world. Index was forced to remember 103,000 grimoires, making her a sought-after entity in the Magical circle. To control her, the Necessarius Church scheduled a memory purge each year under the guise of keeping her safe from brain overloads. Which one of these two maidens exhibits a stronger will power: Charlotte Dunois, or Index L. Prohibitorum? |
Haruna (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Yui (Angel Beats!)
In the world of moe, there are a lot of features and archetypes adored by anime fans. One of these said traits is the fang-tan—where the character is portrayed with cute feline teeth protruding out from her mouth even when closed. A pair of fang-tans, Haruna and Yui, square off against each other. They are both ‘genki’ girls, and more often than not, they are both a bit too high-strung compared to the other characters in their respective shows. Smiles are almost permanently etched on their faces, and their mere presences could lift the doom and gloom atmosphere gripping either the Aikawa household or the SSS Brigade meeting room. Will the Misteltainn-armed Haruna be able to beat her opponent, or will Yui’s guitar sway the match the other way in this ‘Battle of the Fang-tans?’ |
Huang Lingyin (<Infinite Stratos>) vs. Nakano Azusa (K-ON!)
Both of our contestants today share one thing in common: bodies small in stature. But, the similarities end here. Both Nakano Azusa and Huang Lingyin are currently at opposite ends of the leaderboard. While Azusa, who currently sits at 3rd, is almost guaranteed a Postseason spot, Lingyin's chances of making it into the Top 16 at the end of the Regular Season are extremely slim. Despite this, Lingyin is determined to win. Knowing that the possibility of winning against her Tier 1 opponent exists, China's IS representative prepares to give it her all when she goes up against the guitar-wielding kōhai of Hōkago Tea Time. In the end, will the energetic fang-tan be able to annihilate her opponent, or will she become another victim in Azu-nyan's quest for the Heavenly Tiara? |
Sakagami Tomoyo (CLANNAD) vs. Shiina Mafuyu (Seitokai no Ichizon)
Today, Sakagami Tomoyo and Shiina Mafuyu face each other in the arena. These two have tricky but important similarities, which can make it harder for either of them to win this match. Though they don’t look like it, neither are the most feminine of characters, and both have problems in finding love. In Tomoyo's case, this is because she is rumored to be violent and have a record for fighting and misconduct, while on Mafuyu’s side, it is because she is very frightened by men. Yet, they both managed to find people with whom they fell in love. They continued to believe in their dreams and always gave them their best shots. As these two face each other in the arena driven by their hopes and dreams, who will be victorious? |
Kasugano Sora (Yosuga no Sora) vs. Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
Most people nowadays devalue the meaning of the two words “love” and “happiness”. But for both Kasugano Sora and Eucliwood Hellscythe, those two words mean the whole world. With a multitude of tragedies having befallen these two long-haired maidens, their inner cores have been shattered to the point of them shunning society. They are not doing this to spite the others, but because they are trying to protect their fragile hearts. Sinking deeper into the abyss of loneliness, they would have been consumed by the darkness engulfing them. But when it mattered the most, the rays of warmth and hope shone upon them from the most unlikely of sources. Cherished and protected by her twin brother, Sora finally managed to creep away from the pain and suffering which had accompanied her since birth. Eucliwood, on the other hand, managed to confront the darkness engulfing her, together with her newfound companions. As these two girls grasp warmth and happiness, which one of them will have achieved greater victory, Sora or Eucliwood? |
Saber (Fate/stay night) vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD)
Beauty, brain, and brawn collide as these two veterans clash once more. These two girls battled in 2008, where Kyō emerged as the victor. This class president knows how to send a clear and powerful message to her opponents without using a hardcover dictionary. Saber's pride could not accept this defeat and called for a re-match the following year. In 2009, despite Saber's strong efforts, Kyō remained standing when their match ceased. Yet, Saber was not about to give up. Last year by a mere 58-vote margin, Saber was finally able to topple her arch-nemesis and obtain the victory. She demonstrated that she could be at the top of her game with enough effort. Now, they stand toe-to-toe once more in the familiar arena. Can Saber show once more why she is considered the strongest of her kind and even the score, or will Kyō prove to her that their latest encounter was simply a fluke? |
Kiriya Nozomi (Mayoi Neko Overrun!) vs. Isurugi Mio (MM!)
I did not wish for it to be this way. So what if my talents far exceed those of my peers? My abilities do not benefit me if they only sadden those around me. That is why I left; I could not bear to see the pain of my friends. However, even upon leaving, things just got worse. My feelings mingled with everyone else’s, and I could see how bothered they were from them. I wish I could say something, but there is only so much happiness that I can obtain. I only sought to help others. How could I know that I was just hurting myself? I wanted to give back to those who helped me from before. That is why I created the club, so that no one would be sad. It does not matter who sends the request; I will always get the job done. Despite this, there is a limit to how many wishes I can grant before I hurt myself. A plate of happiness sits in front of me. She deserves to have that plate more than me. I want to give it to her, but...but...I... |

Emerald 3 — 4 August 2011
Shiina (Angel Beats!) vs. Kasugano Sora (Yosuga no Sora)
The fun and games stop here. They have endlessly switched places so that they could finally get the chance to settle this madness. Shiina walks towards the ring, looking straight ahead. For someone of her caliber, she could care less as to whom her opponent is, as long as she comes back victorious. Her ninja ways will not allow her to falter for a second. This is nothing personal; it is simply business. On the other side, Kasugano Sora paces herself, still holding the stuffed rabbit in her hand. It is not to lure Shiina and make her defenseless; rather, it is a good luck charm for herself. Holding this gives her more than enough confidence to move on the other’s failure. It is up to her to show to a certain someone how much she has grown, no matter how far apart they are. They finally stand in front of one another, with neither moving an inch, letting their eyes tell the story. Both brace themselves, and the battle for that second victory commences! |
Akiyama Mio (K-ON!) vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD)
Some people come into our lives and leave just as quickly. Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts. But when they go, we will never, ever be the same again. What would some people do when their friends would move or pass away, cry about it? Be angry because of it? For the two who face each other in the arena today, friendship is like their source of life. Suppose if Mio wasn't a part of the light-music club, would she have as many friends as she had then? And if Kyō never met Tomoya and his friends, wouldn't she and her sister be alone? They probably can't imagine themselves what it would be like if something bad were to happen to their friends, or if they had never met them, because these two treasure their friends above anything else and use that as a reason to fight. But, unfortunately, they have already lost people dear to them in the Preliminaries: Mio lost her crony, Ritsu, and Kyō saw the fall of her once-popular sister, Ryō. They both want revenge, but only one can win today. Who can stand up for her friends better? |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
Many envisage proper, lady-like lives for the two ojōsama, Sanzen’in Nagi and Misaka Mikoto. Grace, modesty, as well as social immaculacy, should have been the traits shared by these light-haired ladies. But, the truth is that these two maidens are the antitheses of ojosama, themselves. Often lazing off during her days by playing countless games or reading mountains of manga, Nagi’s routine mirrors that of a commoner. Instead of diligently going to school or attending piano classes, she would rather work on her manga. As for Mikoto, she spends her free time with her friends or helping the Judgment team safeguard the sanctity of Gakuen City. She also likes to read manga. Will games and manga give Sanzen’in Nagi the advantage over Misaka Mikoto, or will Mikoto’s Judgment works tilt the scale the other way around in the battle of the ‘Misfit Ojōsama?’ |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
They say to be wary of black cats and snakes, but how can one when both of them are voiced by the same seiyū and have cute features? Maybe one should stop and understand them. While it is true that Gokō Ruri is a mature and independent high school student, deep down, all she may truly need is a little bit of love. Juggling familiar responsibilities and otaku hobbies, even she can use a break once in a while. Given her attitude, it will only be a matter of time before she understands that she is missing something in her life. One may call Sengoku Nadeko a shy, yet playful, girl, but she too hides a secret. Whether she knows it or not, she is quite a popular girl in her school. However, the feelings one has for her can only go so far. If she makes the wrong move, who knows what terrible things may await her? All both of them need is someone to talk to at the end of the day. When this match ends, will it be Ruri's personality, or Nadeko's attention, that stands out the most? |
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky ☆ Star)
Today, the well-known tsundere trait is clearly displayed in this battle. Shana, among others, often appears supreme and hostile, but shows a softer side to people about whom she cares. On the other hand, Kagami pretends to be mature and is quickly irritated by stupid comments from her friends, but when Konata makes a comment that reveals Kagami’s silliness, she quickly gets embarrassed. Both also have the need for the presence of others—without it, they feel weak and lonely. But, that’s exactly why these two easily acquired their own fan bases and belong on the list of ISML’s more successful characters. Still, Kagami has lessened in popularity lately and will have to fight for a spot in the Postseason. She must take all the opportunities she can get, and is there anything better than starting with beating a tiara-favorite? One problem…Shana won’t let that happen so easily! |
Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto)
Both Charlotte Dunois and Kōsaka Kirino exhibit a case of “first impressions can be misleading.” Charlotte entered the IS Academy disguised as a guy, delighting its almost all-female students. Glad that he might not be alone in the academy, Ichika quickly become close friends with her. Unbeknownst to him, she was given a secret task. As for Kirino, underneath her image as a model student is a girl who loves to play dating sims. With her well-kept secret busted by her brother, Kyōsuke, she resorted to making her benevolent brother an accomplice, instead of a mere bystander. As the race heats up, both Charlotte and Kirino know that the outcome of the match might gauge their own potential of entering the Postseason. Will the charm of the French IS cadet be able to propel Charlotte Dunois to victory, or will the allure of her own modeling help Kōsaka Kirino seize the initiative instead? |
Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
Emerald Round 3 pits two highly skilled combatants against each other. While these two maidens’ looks are very pleasing to the eyes, their inner cores are as sturdy as rock. Cold, imposing, and unassuming, Laura Bodewig has worked her way up the ranks of the German squad, earning the rank of Commander of her own unit. Trained by the German military, she has been taught to follow orders, and execute them flawlessly. On the other hand, raised by her clan to become a successful kyūketsu-ninja, Seraphim has mastered her Tsubamegaeshi secret sword technique. Aloof and slightly cynical, she puts the completion of her given duties as her first priority. As these girls battle each other, which one of them will the goddess of victory smile upon, the Schwarzer Regen-armed Laura Bodewig, or Seraphim, master of the Tsubamegaeshi technique? |
Iwasawa Asami (Angel Beats!) vs. Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
A broken family has caused both of today's contestants to experience difficult childhoods. The lack of love from both their parents left these girls to fend for themselves, forcing them to find someone or something they could rely on. Iwasawa Asami turned to music, while Katsura Hinagiku looked to her sister for solace. But after fighting through the hard times, both girls are finally able to know what it feels like to be loved—Asami by her fans and Hina by her peers at school. For them, the past is just the past, with the future being what matters to them. And what will the future hold in store? That is for you to decide and for them to find out. |
Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Holo (Spice and Wolf)
Two veterans are paired together in this match; both Suzumiya Haruhi and Holo have contested in the ISML tournament since its inception. These maidens have met each other three times during their ISML career, and Haruhi has came out triumphant in each of their encounters. The self-proclaimed God has also entered the Postseason fireworks in each year of ISML, with her best Postseason outing in 2010, finishing the season in 8th place. The wise wolf of Yoitsu, on the other hand, has only managed a solitary appearance in the Postseason during ISML 2009, ending the season in 13th place. Both veterans are finding it hard this year, though, with Haruhi currently in the cusp of being eliminated from the Postseason for the first time, while Holo’s languishing further down the table, in 31st place. With the influx of new contestants in ISML, both Suzumiya Haruhi and Holo know that a win will be paramount to them, and they will go all out to achieve that. |
Kamio Misuzu (AIR) vs. Hyūga Hinata (NARUTO)
It is hard to make friends, but they are not at fault. One girl would do anything to have someone close with whom to play. She would go out of her way to talk about random topics, or bring out some toys with which to play. But if you got too close to her, she might cry, or worse, fall ill. Could it be that she could not obtain friends due to this "unknown disease?" For the other, it is not that she cannot make friends. All this time, she has been known as the heir of a powerful clan. However, no matter how hard she works and trains, it seems as if she cannot meet her family's expectations. With the pressure from her family and the constant belief that she is a failure, she develops an inferiority complex and rarely speaks out to others. In times of need, they need someone to reach his or her hand out to them and tell them that it will be alright. Who shall the voters reach out to? |

Emerald 4 — 7 August 2011
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
vs. Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
A tornado of leaves encircles these supernatural beings, curving the long, blue-white hair of the necromancer around to meet the rich black of the kyūketsu-ninja. Resigned to a life she cannot control, Yuu sighs: cruelty is her bitter friend, sadness her constant companion. Alone for centuries, but for the fear and power that haunted her, she, alone, understands the pain Seraphim feels, the loneliness and worried panic locked behind the vampire's stoic face. She sees the sensitive heart protected by the proud, haughty demeanor that it hides behind, the heart that was willing to give up everything it knew for her. And as they are forced against each other by the cruel world they are both all too familiar with, Eucliwood can empathize with Sera's inability to bring herself up to raise her Hiken Tsubamegaeshi against the gentle, child-like figure of the one who saved her life, the one who taught her to feel love for the very first time, the one who is her friend. Yet as quiet, sapphire eyes meet over-bright emerald, both know, no matter what the outcome, they've come too far together, shared too much, to ever turn against one another. |
Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto) vs. Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto)
Kirino has always known that the day her best friend finds out the truth behind her secret hobby, all hell will break loose. That day has come. If there is one thing Aragaki Ayase hates more than the lewd habits of otaku, it is lying; and now, she finds out her dearest friend and idol has lied to her repeatedly about her love for such games. Betrayed and hurt, the blue-haired model knows she must break her silence and confront her fallen friend, restoring the perfect, straight-A role model she's always known. But Kirino knows Ayase is ill-informed on the true nature of anime, has been biased by the media, and can't understand the happiness she feels as Kirino sings along to the Stardust Witch Meruru theme song. Herself hurting at the blatant rejection of her imōto-love games, Kirino mirrors the pain Ayase feels, feeling as guilty for lying as Ayase feels devastated. As their inevitable confrontation takes place, can Kirino show her honest, upright friend the joy she feels as she navigates the routes of her beloved younger-sister-centered eroge? Or, will Ayase be able to bring her two-faced friend to honesty and see life her way? |
Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!)
It is a universal truth that stubborn, headstrong leaders clash. When one fights the injustice and cruelty of the almighty Kami-sama, and the other is the very god she fights, this clash will undoubtedly spiral to truly epic proportions. Embittered by the harsh world, Nakamura Yuri carries the burden of her three younger siblings on her conscience, blaming herself and her powerlessness for their untimely deaths, the shattering of her once-happy world. Oblivious to the power she controls, Suzumiya Haruhi lives a whimsical, joyful life tailored to her ideals, a life dedicated to fun, excitement, and her friends, whether they be aliens, espers, time travellers—or just a certain cynic. Both the embodiments of abundant love, these two determined girls are dedicated to their followers, seeking to do the best for their friends in every way. But before they can fully enjoy the wonders of a happy life, a score must be settled. Will Yuri and the SSS triumph over the betrayal and pain of their difficult lives and finally reach peace? Or, will Haruhi's SOS Brigade fulfill her expectations and put everyone back in their rightful places? |
Fate Testarossa (Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha) vs. Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky ☆ Star)
Topaz 1, 2008. Winner's Round 3, 2008. Diamond 9, 2009. Topaz 4, 2010. Back and forth, these twin-tail veterans fought with every broken limb they had to offer. In 2008, Fate Testarossa wreaked havoc along with Bardiche in their first and second encounters, proving to both Kagami and the rest of her competition why she is considered the strongest girl in the running. Hiiragi Kagami was not going to let this embarrassment slip so easily. In the 2009 final match of the Regular Season, Kagami was able to pull out all the stops and finally claimed her first victory against her. Kagami demonstrated a highly competitive attitude and stopped at nothing to get a victory. It all seemed well until 2010, when Fate was able to pummel her opponent once more, revenge for what happened the previous year. The score stands 3-1, and these two warriors take the stage once more. With both characters knowing each other well enough, it will only take a single flaw to determine who the winner will be. Can Fate knock down her competitor for the fourth time, or will Kagami obtain her second win against her? |
Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Victorique de Blois (GOSICK)
With a fiery personality, Huang Lingyin is the mirror opposite of Victorique de Blois. China's IS representative is always quick to talk and slow to listen. With the physical characteristics of a fang-tan and the personality of a genki girl, Lingyin always strives to be the best among her peers. On the other hand, Victorique is the reserved type of girl who prefers to observe others from the sidelines. With the help of her Wellspring of Wisdom, this intelligent Golden Fairy is able to solve any mystery given to her in a flash. Today, we get to see which is more powerful: the physical strength of an IS, or the analytical ability of the Wellspring of Wisdom. |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto)
vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Kuroneko has managed to skillfully blend into the shadows when it comes to confronting her seiyū sisters, but on the home stretch of the slippery slope that is the HanaKana Wars, Charlotte refuses to let her hide any longer. Both are mirror-image shy, quiet girls, but don't let their soft-spoken meekness fool you; under their reserved demeanors lie fervent passions and iron wills. Whether it's Ruri's passion for role-playing, love for anime, and faithful dedication to her beloved Maschera, or Char's passion for IS, love for Ichika, and refusal to give him up to her classmates, both girls embody the essence of the Order of the Lotus: beautiful, gentle, and soft on the outside, resilient and strong within. These two newcomers have fought their way up the charts, knocking aside veterans and fellow newcomers alike to become favorites for the Postseason. As these Hanazawa Kana characters face off, will the purple of the fallen Tenshi-nyan blanket the sky? Or, will the gold of the French IS pilot glow victorious? |
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Tōsaka Rin (Fate/stay night)
Crimson is the colour that signifies both Shana and Tōsaka Rin. Her eyes and hair turn red, as Shana unleashes her fury upon the crimson denizens, hell-bent on protecting the balance and order between the worlds. Tsundere in nature, it took her a while before she realised her true feelings toward the main protagonist. Torn between her feelings and the duty bound to her, Shana continues to struggle both physically and emotionally. Rin, on the other hand, predominantly wears a red shirt. Picked as one of the masters in the fifth Holy Grail war, she is a talented magus. She tried to summon a knight spirit, but the spell went awry and instead summoned a different servant instead. While she is slightly tsundere in nature, it also took her awhile until she realised her feelings. As the 'Nietono no Shana' clashes with the ‘Unlimited Blade Works,’ will Shana be able to ‘colour’ Tōsaka Rin’s body with blood, or will her opponent smear her crimson-red instead? |
Akiyama Mio (K-ON!) vs. Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Two tall and beautiful bishōjo voiced by Hikasa Yōko take to the stage today as Hōkago Tea Time bassist, Akiyama Mio, takes on fourth-generation IS pilot, Shinonono Hōki. Physically, these two are very much alike; their long hair and model-like figures leave others in awe. But, their personalities couldn't be any more different. Mio is shy and constrained, often cringing at the thought of scary stories or being in the spotlight. As for Hōki, she has a tomboyish personality, regularly practicing kendo and wielding the strength to possibly take down a grown man. However, the determinations of these two maidens are equal. Both have the desire to be the best at what they do—whether it be playing the bass or practicing kendo. In the end, which one will you vote for? Is Mio with her shy personality the one for you, or does Hōki's physical strength impress you more? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!)
As the cheers of the audience shake the rafters at her introduction, Hinagiku glances over her shoulder at her ever-faithful, adoring Student Council Trio, awed into rare silence that their little prank had turned their friend into a household name. Turning, in hopes of glimpsing that certain unfortunate butler she knew was watching, the flash of light reflecting off her pink hair catches the eye of her opponent in the wings directly opposite: none other than the lead vocalist of the world-renowned Hōkago Tea-Time. Hirasawa Yui smiles; the Seitokaichō may have been able to sing her way past her sister, but there's no way Hina can win against her. Yui effortlessly tunes her guitar, confident her greater experience and dual-ability to both play and sing simultaneously will sway the competition in her favor. But in trading her shinai for a microphone, Hinagiku has discovered a new talent, and her triumph onstage in the last two rounds has only helped to enrich it. As the musician showdown comes to its finale, let the music begin! |
Yui (Angel Beats!) vs. Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!)
Infinite energy, sheer stubborn will, and passion for life: Taiga and Yui mirror one another, embodying all three. Yet for both, there lie sensitive, broken hearts behind their strength. They exude confidence and independence, but their fragile souls quietly await the people ready to heal them, restore them: the ones who will love them. Life has been harsh for both of them. Difficult parents forced Taiga from home; difficult classmates forced her to hide behind a glowering frown, her pain invisible behind the fear she incited. Time ticked on for Yui, unable to move without assistance, to meet and make new friends, simply awaiting death—silent in her pain lest she burden her family more. Still, neither Taiga, nor Yui, let it dampen their spirits, and their waiting paid off. Today, as they race neck-and-neck towards the necklace they've both been biding their time for, will Ryūji's gentleness and tender care for the bokken-wielding tsundere give her the support she needs to triumph? Or, will Hinata's readiness to do anything and everything for the lively genki-girl give her the courage and peace she needs to move ahead? |
Mineva Lao Zabi (Mobile Suit Gundam) vs. Kō Shūrei (Saiunkoku Monogatari)
If one wishes to test a man's character, give him power. Seeking the power to bring positive change to their worlds, Kō Shūrei and Mineva Lao Zabi struggle with gender and political discrimination. Born into the well-respected, yet impoverished Kō clan, Shūrei supports her family by working odd jobs as an accountant, teacher, and musician while nurturing her dream to become a government official. Defying societal norms, she finally entered the male-dominated imperial court. Hoping to better herself and her country, she is met with indifference from politicians who seek only the prestige of her name, not her ability. Heir to the fallen empire of Zeon, Mineva shoulders the dignity and responsibility of the Zabi legacy by projecting a prideful front that masks a kind, dedicated, and righteous individual. Witnessing human tragedies from the ongoing conflicts between Zeon and the Earth Federation, she strives to restore peace to the solar system, even if doing so means defying the imperialistic agenda of her family and the anachronistic ideals of her people. Armed with their wit and charisma, and tempered by the unfair circumstances they have faced, Shūrei and Mineva are natural leaders. Today's match honors their pride, beauty, and success. |

Emerald 5 — 9 August 2011
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto)
The time has finally come for ISML's most decorated contestant. With her Regular Season career record sitting at 199-6, Shana looks to be the first girl in ISML history to capture the elusive 200th win. Many others are close, but none are as close as the Flame Haze. But in order to successfully join the 200-win club, she must overcome her obstacle today: Kōsaka Kirino. Excellent in both academics and athletics, along with unmatched beauty, Kirino seemingly has a perfect life. But, will all her skills and talents be able to help her stop the arguably most powerful ISML contestant ever from getting her 200th win? In this match, the stakes are high and the tension is building. When this highly anticipated encounter is over, will Kirino be victim #200, or will she be able to do the unthinkable and douse Shana's blazing flames? |
Hirasawa Ui (K-ON!) vs. Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!)
The inevitable has finally come for the Hirasawa sisters: the day where a year-old sibling rivalry is revived. Last year, this fateful meeting between the two sisters took place during Ruby Round 5, where older sister, Yui, claimed the victory with a 2786-1136 count. This year, the two meet again, one period earlier, in Emerald Round 5. After almost a year of preparation, Ui looks to even the score with her troublesome older sister. On the other hand, Yui is determined to prove that age does matter as she seeks to defeat her motherly younger sister. No matter what the results are, it is obvious that the tight bond that these two share will not be broken. It is evident that, through thick and thin, these two are always there for each other. So now, as ISML's only "sibling battle" of the year is about to get underway, which sister will you choose? |
Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!) vs. Sakagami Tomoyo (CLANNAD)
When one obtains a certain amount of power in a social community, there are bound to be enemies lying in wait. A rumor that leads to gossiping often results in detrimental effects on one's reputation. Such is the case for both contestants today. For Tachibana Kanade, the misconception of her being an angel sent by the god of the Afterlife caused her to face many hardships at the hands of the SSS. Similarly, Tomoyo's image as a violent delinquent jeopardized her chances of becoming the student council president at school. But in the end, both of these girls found people they could trust and rely on, allowing them to enjoy life more. Along with this support, the two now must face each other to see which student council president is superior. Will Kanade and her HandSonic help her remain undefeated, or will her opponent prove that CLANNAD characters still have some fight left in them? |
Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
Nightmare—a powerful word when put into perspective. Both Misaka Mikoto and Sengoku Nadeko were gripped by haunting nightmares until they met their saviours in the unlikeliest of sources. Resented by her classmate for turning down a confession, as well as by another girl who liked the confessor, Nadeko was cursed by two constricting snake spirits. She tried her best to hide her nightmare from her circle of friends, writhing silently as her life was slowly strangled away. Had it not been for her chance re-encounter with a certain member of the Araragi household, her fate would have been sealed. The nightmare gripping Mikoto was the side of Gakuen City unbeknownst to the general public, where thousands of her clones were mercilessly killed. Gritting her teeth, the Railgun decided to end her nightmare by confronting the terror itself. The appearance of a certain level-zero esper helped her overcome her haunting nightmare. As the future now looks bright for these fine maidens, which one of them will have better dreams in their sleep—Misaka Mikoto or Sengoku Nadeko? |
Victorique de Blois (GOSICK) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
Finding herself at the bottom of a dark and eerie-looking library is the last situation Akiyama Mio expected to be in. As a cool breeze grazes her cheek, all her greatest fears start to invade her thoughts. Are there monsters within this darkness? Will she be able to escape alive? Why is this place so creepy? Just then, she spots a light coming from somewhere at the top of a long, winding staircase. From past experiences, Mio knows that the presence of light usually means joy and happiness. And with that thought in mind, the surprisingly athletic bassist begins to ascend the steps one by one. When she finally reaches the top, the most beautiful botanical garden she has ever seen comes into view. However, out of the corner of her eye, she spots a blonde-haired, doll-like girl reading a book. Suddenly, the girl gets up and angrily accuses Mio of disturbing her peace, demanding that she leave. Not wanting to be surrounded by darkness again, Mio has no choice but to stand her ground. And with that, the battle between these two maidens begins... |
Index L. Prohibitorum (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
vs. Fate Testarossa (Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha)
It has been far too long since their first encounter in that city by the river. Now, Index L. Prohibitorum declares a re-match with Fate Testarossa to see who is the stronger of the two. Index wasted no time training during her one-year absence. She has gone through multiple countries, strengthening her appetite by indulging in every exotic food she sees and her jaws by biting a person's head. But even with her calm and bubbly personality, is her training enough? Fate is still considered one of the strongest magical girls in the world, proud of her power and unparalleled speed. Her strong sense of judgment and willingness to help others has made her a major icon to the millions watching her. Magic happens to be on of Index's specialties, seeing as she has memorized 103,000 magical books. She may have blundered in their first encounter, but not this time! Does Index know a spell that can knock Fate off her feet, or is Fate still too strong for Index to handle? |
Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Tōsaka Rin (Fate/stay night)
Both Charlotte Dunois and Tōsaka Rin know the pain associated with losing someone dear to them. Charlotte led a quiet and peaceful life until the sudden passing of her beloved mother. To compound the loss, she was then treated like an outsider by her own father. Devoid of fatherly care since her birth, and of motherly warmth since her teens, Charlotte knew she needed to fend for herself if she wanted to survive. As for Rin, the father she admired died when she was still a kid. As a result, she bore her family’s proud name by keeping her appearance as an honour student and a high-class ojōsama. The magus had to conceal the fact that she was the heir of a long line of magi. Which maiden’s struggle will captivate the hearts of the voters—will it be Charlotte Dunois, the France IS cadet representative, or the magus from the Tōsaka household, Tōsaka Rin? |
Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD)
Today, two, high-energy tsundere switch targets from their love interests to each other, in an attempt to show off their strength. Despite being close to the ones they like, both Huang Lingyin and Fujibayashi Kyō know that there are people around them who try to outdo them in the area of love. Whether these people are complete strangers from different countries or someone close like a sister, the two of them know that they must work hard in order to rise to the top. And now, they are given the chance to do just that—prove that they are the best choices for relationships. When all is said and done, which one of these love-struck ladies will emerge victorious? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Holo (Spice and Wolf)
Today’s match-up is between two veterans in the world of ISML—Nagato Yuki and Holo. Both maidens are hardly human themselves, as Yuki is an artificial human, while Holo is a wolf deity. Another similarity between the contestants is that they are both very insightful and wise. But, the parallels end here. There are striking differences between these two otherworldly beings. While Yuki can often be found immersed in books, her counterpart would prefer to either feast on apples, or travel. Their personalities are direct opposites of the other, as Yuki can be viewed as the perfect kūdere who rarely speaks her mind, while Holo can be viewed as a cheerful girl who is haughty and talkative. The stage has been set for this “Battle of Endless Wisdom.” Which one of the two will outthink her opponent, the four-year-old Nagato Yuki, or the six-hundred-year-old Holo? |
Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!) vs. Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
As I woke up from my 4-week coma after witnessing a bloodbath between Eucliwood Hellscythe and Nakamura Yuri, and knowing the victor, I mustered enough inner strength to re-visit the eerie graveyard. The moonlight once again hid behind the clouds, and tense feelings crept over me. Much to my horror, I felt a fearful gaze coming from behind. Boasting a body as curvaceous as a model, with long, silky hair and emerald-coloured eyes, the young woman pressed forward towards her opponent after giving me a wry smile. Her fuschia-haired and emerald-eyed adversary stood her ground, calculating her next moves. As she drew her Beretta 92 pistol, a sudden change in the wind swirled leaves around the black-haired beauty, forming a ‘bokken’. She taunted her challenger about the loss to Eucliwood during the last full moon. Focusing in retaliation, Nakamura Yuri wielded her pistol expertly while shouting, “I will defeat you, Seraphim!” Not willing to suffer the same fate as before, I decided to flee from the scene without seeing the result... |
Lucy (Elfen Lied) vs. Shirakawa Kotori (D.C. ~Da Capo~)
These girls may look like happy-go-lucky girls on the outside, but, deep down, they have secrets that they do not wish to share. Lucy may seem like your average airhead who knows little about what the world is like; however, hitting a sweet spot may change her personality. In the past, Lucy was bullied to the point of her adversaries killing her pet. This unlocked her demonic powers, and she killed them just like they did to her little friend. All she ever wanted was a good friend to be around with who would ignore her unusual features. Shirakawa Kotori has the ability to read other people's minds. Because she is a school idol, it is hard for her to find the right person to be around when most of the people she meets only desire her presence for her status. She feels uneasy inside, waiting to find the right person to talk with about her problems without frightening them. Surely, the voters can lend a shoulder to one of these girls, correct? |

Emerald 6 — 11 August 2011
Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) vs. Yui (Angel Beats!)
(Angel Beats!)
Cat ears, devil's tail, electric guitars, oh my! It is a musical showdown between two high-rising contenders to determine the best musician. Nakano Azusa is a rather serious girl, making sure that things are done properly and that no time is wasted. No matter how much she tries to control a situation, it eventually overcomes her, and she becomes a part of the wild ride her seniors have put her in. Nevertheless, her love of music is truly inspiring. In contrast, Yui is an energetic and hyperactive girl. She is so wild that her friends wonder if she will hurt herself during important missions. Even so, she does care about the people around her and wants to make sure that they have fun just like she does. These two combatants have now reached the grand stage with the voters as their audience. It is time to make their predecessors proud after everything that they have taught them. The curtain rises, and the music is on! |
Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Haruna (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
ISML has not been kind for these two fang-tans as a whole, as Lingyin has already been eliminated from the running to enter the Postseason. With her record reading at a paltry three wins in thirty-three matches, she is languishing near the bottom of the leader board. Haruna is also having the same tough predicament as her challenger today. It may only be a matter of time before she is mathematically out of the Postseason, kissing her chance to grasp the Tiara goodbye. Faring slightly better with six wins and twenty-seven losses, she has been languishing in the bottom ten rankings since early in the Aquamarine period. While this might sound all doom and gloom for these two newcomers, they will keep slugging on until the very end. Which maiden will be able to chalk up another win after this match-up—Huang Lingyin or Haruna? |
Aisaka Taiga (Toradora) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
Our next two challengers have proven that they don't need similar personalities and goals to succeed. Akiyama Mio takes an active approach in making the Light Music Club a success, while at the same time, she doesn't resist the pranks her club members play on her. Her achievements in Saimoe include an Aquamarine necklace, the Heavenly Tiara, and a KBM title in 2010. Aisaka Taiga is also determined to succeed just as much as her opponent. In addition, she will use violent methods to prove that jokes or pranks will not be tolerated. Her Saimoe achievements nearly mirror her opponent's; she won KBM and AST in 2009 and won the Topaz Necklace in 2010. Taiga also has bragging rights over her opponent from last year. By winning 2850-2827 in Round 7 of Ruby, she handed Mio her first loss and denied her a second necklace for the season. Will the Palmtop Tiger unleash her claws on her opponent again, or will the bassist for the Light Music Club get even and prove she can defend the Heavenly Tiara? |
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
With their positions for the Postseason all sewn up, both Eucliwood Hellscythe and Suzumiya Haruhi can now turn their attentions to a different matter altogether. Boasting immaculate records of five wins each in the Emerald period, both maidens are firmly in the mix for the Emerald necklace shootout. A loss for either one of them will severely dent those chances. They are both separated by a couple of places in the Emerald table, due to Eucliwood’s superior SDO. Giving justice to the tag applied to her as one of the leading newcomers, the maiden has chalked up a staggering twenty-nine wins up to date. Haruhi, on the other hand, is one of the few veterans that is still going strong since ISML 2008. She has been entering the Postseason fireworks since ISML’s inception, and this year, the story seems the same. As the Necromancer of the Underworld meets the supposed god, will she be able to defy her, or will the god be able to topple her opponent instead? |
Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari) vs. Tōsaka Rin (Fate/stay night)
Two different personas square off against each other in this match. Sengoku Nadeko can be categorised as a timid and lovable girl, while Tōsaka Rin is a firm and driven maiden. They are asymmetrical to each other in a lot of things. Nadeko protects her short hair using a rather goofy hat, while Rin boasts long and silky hair. While it is hard for Nadeko to speak her mind even when the need arises, Rin doesn’t need any invitation to spill her thoughts. Their approaches to monumental dangers are polar opposite of each other, as Nadeko quietly writhes alone, begrudgingly accepts her fate, whilst Rin stands up and challenges the predicaments befalling her. Which type of girl will be the choice of the voters—the timid and quiet type, like Sengoku Nadeko, or the strong, outgoing type, like Tōsaka Rin? |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
One by one, they test their abilities to see if they can take out the legendary immovable object. A handful make it out alive; the rest are burned to the dust. Shana has defeated nearly every opponent that she has encountered at least once. With Shana obtaining her 200th victory, it seems as if it is almost impossible to quell the strength of her flames. Does her next opponent have what it takes to take her down? Gokō Ruri has proven once that she has what is needed to take out a Tier 1 contender, namely Akiyama Mio in Sapphire 4. She is in the lead for being the top performer in the Emerald period, bringing yet more momentum in her steed. She also has some bragging rights as she prevented Shana from obtaining the Sapphire necklace for the third time. She managed to out-maneuver Shana in the Necklace Round, but can she perform the same tactic a second time in this one-on-one confrontation? In a match with intensity hotter than fire, can Ruri crash the party celebrating Shana's 200th victory, or will she be yet another victim in Shana's defeated list? |
Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
For both Misaka Mikoto and Charlotte Dunois, their natural beauty is not what really defines them. With a toss of a coin, Mikoto is able to subdue people who dare to challenge her. Known as the Electromaster, or the Railgun, she is the third strongest esper in Gakuen city. Woe beset the truants and delinquents who try to hit her up during her countless night walks. With her cute face coupled with the ojōsama aura surrounding her, she gives off a vibe of an easy prey—while in fact, she is not. Charlotte has her trusted Raphael Revive II custom at her disposal. Even though her IS unit is considered slightly outdated compared to the newer third generation models, the Raphael Revive more than compensates for that with its practicality and ‘Rapid Switch’ ability. Blessed with natural beauty—long, silky hair and amethyst-coloured eyes—she gives off a normal, pretty girl vibe, not an IS pilot. Will Misaka Mikoto be able to electrocute Charlotte Dunois using her lightning-based attacks, or will the interchangeable weapons of the ‘Rapid Switch’ system conquer instead? |
Flandre Scarlet (Tōhō Project) vs. Remilia Scarlet (Tōhō Project)
Deep in the heart of the Scarlet Devil Mansion lies a creature feared by all. A vampire with deep, red eyes and light, blue hair awaits any fool who dares to enter to challenge and vanquish her. This is a maiden who sacrificed her growth and maturity in exchange for eternal life, shrouds a town in a magical mist to walk outside during daylight hours, and drinks little blood due to her small appetite. She may be a selfish girl despite living for over 500 years, but her power is nothing to play with. Deeper in the heart of the mansion lies another creature beyond compare. She appears as a cute, docile child with red eyes and blond hair. She acts like any child would: full of energy and ready to play. However, her power is insurmountable to the point where even her hosts are destroyed without leaving a single drop of blood behind. It is a battle nearly five hundred years in the making filled with respect, love, and hatred beyond bounds. Which of the Scarlet sisters will become the true ruler of the mansion? One thing is for certain: there will be blood! |

Emerald 7 — 14 August 2011
Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto) vs. Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto)
I watched the two of them from a distance. Seeing them evidently enjoying themselves made me feel slightly jealous. Looking back at the times I had spent with her—both at school and during the photo shoots—I felt that there was an inseparable bond between us. But things started to fall apart; I had to stop it before it was too late. So that's when I decided that I would confront Kirino's new friend. As I walked towards them, many different questions popped into my head. The girl introduced herself as Gokō Ruri, otherwise known as Kuroneko. Everything about her screamed “otaku,” and seeing her face to face only added to my discomfort. Knowing that she was the source of all our problems, I wanted to question her about everything. But, no words came out of my mouth. At that moment, I knew that I had gotten myself into a tough situation. But if this is the only way to bring my best friend back to reality, then I'm ready to do anything... |
Hirasawa Ui (K-ON!) vs. Shiina Mafuyu (Seitokai no Ichizon)
平泽忧(K-ON!)vs.
There is a stark difference between Hirasawa Ui and Shiina Mafuyu. While these petite maidens are the imōto in their households—to Yui and Minatsu, respectively—their roles in the sibling relationship are different. Ui swaps her role with her onee-chan. Able to do household chores perfectly, she is also the person with whom Yui can seek advice at home when her best friend is not around. On the other hand, Mafuyu acts as the younger of the two siblings. Filling her free time by either reading BL books or playing her handheld PSP, it’s up to Minatsu to cater to her needs at home. In a nutshell, Ui is the dependable one and the voice of reason in her household, while Mafuyu is the one who is tended to by her onee-chan instead. As they lock horns with each other, which one of them will emerge victorious in the ‘Battle of the Imōto’? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
vs. Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
The world falls silent as these two kūdere square off in what should be an interesting match-up. Out of the many people whom she has faced, not once has Nagato Yuki challenged a necromancer quite like Eucliwood Hellscythe. As a first introduction, one may find it odd that Eucliwood uses a memo to write her thoughts, but once she writes something nice, you’ll know that she is having fun. Once used to solitude, as long as she has someone she loves at her side, everything will be fine. For Yuki, who has been alone for so long, her main form of entertainment is being around an interesting group of classmates. As soon as she gets involved in something, the situation gets livelier with remarks flying to and fro. Maybe these two just need people who can see them for who they are, both inside and out. Will it be Eucliwood's backstory or Yuki's unknown feelings that grasps the hearts of the voters? |
Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
中野梓(K-ON!) vs. 秋山澪(K-ON!)
Graduation isn't the end. That was the one sentence that Nakano Azusa held onto when the four other members of Hōkago Tea Time graduated from high school. These words have now come true as she finds herself standing face to face with her senpai, Akiyama Mio, bassist of HTT. During their two years together, Azusa looked up to Mio, desiring to become a hardworking and successful person like her senpai. Last year, despite a 355-vote loss to Mio, she witnessed her fellow band mate obtain the Heavenly Tiara. Wanting to follow in her footsteps, Azusa now needs to win every match, even tough ones like today's. So when this musical battle is over, will Azu-nyan be able to show her senpai what she has learned, or will Mio defeat her kōhai once again, showing her superiority in the K-ON! franchise? |
Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
Enough fun and games; this is serious business. As the Nietono no Shana swings towards Misaka Mikoto, the esper tosses a coin, ready to stop Shana in her tracks. This match brings a clash of epic proportions between two indomitable titans in ISML. The Railgun finished second overall in ISML 2010, while the Flame Haze was hot on her tail, ending third. These two colossi are in the mix again this year, with the Electromaster currently leading the pack with an immaculate score of 34 wins, while the Slayer with Flaming Hair and Blazing-Red Eyes is currently fourth, with 32 wins to her name. Several more symmetries can be drawn from these two maidens, such as determination, tsundere-traits, as well as monstrous strength—to which the denizens of Gakuen City and Crimson Realm can testify. With the Aquamarine necklace safely in her possession, a win for Mikoto might not be of utmost importance; however, Shana still awaits a necklace from this season. Shana will be in for a rude awakening if she thinks that Misaka Mikoto will let her win so easily. |
Index L. Prohibitorum (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
The hands of fate have been cruel to both Index L. Prohibitorum and Sengoku Nadeko. Burdened by the Church of Neccesarius to remember 103,000 grimoires, Index’s life has been constantly in danger. With the knowledge stored within her, the magi community knows her true value—a sought after commodity in their own world. The several friends she manages to find during the year will become strangers after her annual memory purge, under the pretext of saving her life. The shy and timid Nadeko endured a lonely childhood. Instead of having fun with her peers, her personality made it difficult for her to mingle with other children her age. To compound the matter, she was cursed by two of her classmates, one because she turned down his confession, and the other who liked that same boy who confessed to Nadeko. As a tiny ray of warmth and hope shines upon them, which maiden will be filled with more joy, Index L. Prohibitorum, or Sengoku Nadeko? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!)
(Angel Beats!)
Having already taken down a student council president in Emerald 5, Tachibana Kanade looks to overcome an even more challenging opponent. This time, she goes up against Hakuō Academy's student council president, Katsura Hinagiku, bearer of the 2009 Heavenly Tiara. Despite being a newcomer to ISML, Kanade has dominated all of her opponents thus far with ease, even managing to defeat many strong opponents, including 2008 and 2010 Heavenly Tiara bearers, Fate Testarossa and Akiyama Mio. Now, she looks to complete her collection of Tiara victims with a win over Hina today. However, knowing Hina, she won't back down without a fight. The determined personality of this kendo expert may prove to be a tough test for Tenshi. In this battle between the HandSonic and the Wooden Masamune, which weapon will prove to be more reliable? |
Last Order (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
vs. Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
After a heavy defeat at the hands of her opponent in the previous round, Last Order will have to muster all of her strength in order to overcome the next girl paired against her. Still smarting from another monumental loss, Shinonono Hōki knows that she needs to show a better performance in the last round of the Emerald Period. This necklace stage has not been kind to either of these maidens. The cute and highly energetic clone has lost all but one of her matches, while the beautiful, Japanese IS cadet representative has not fared any better, losing all of her battles. Instead of being a fairy tale run, ISML 2011 as a whole has been a harsh reality check. Last Order has been languishing in the bottom half of the table for most of the year, while Hōki has been rooted near the bottom of the leaderboard all season long. As for their last hurrah in the Emerald Period, what better way to close than with a bang? |
Yagami Hikari (Digimon) vs. Haibara Ai (Detective Conan)
Usually, it is during dire situations when one shows his or her true potential. That seems to be the case for both of these contestants. Do not let Yagami Hikari's laid-back personality fool you. Whenever her friends are about to fight, she is the first one to put herself in the midst of it. She will go as far as sacrificing herself for her friends so they can escape during times of chaos and confusion. Even when a situation goes awry, her kind words and caring heart melt away people's fears. For Haibara Ai, she may not find her current friends serious or mature, but she cares for them despite this. Whenever they undertake detective work, she shares some of her insight with them. Her words may sound blatant or relaxed, but her knowledge has helped her friends in multiple situations. She also wishes to properly thank those who have helped her along in her current state in any way she can. Which of these girls will make it out alive at the end of this match? |

The Emerald Necklace is said to hold the powers of life itself. Rather than giving birth or planting seeds, it is the willingness to change oneself for the better. Current necklace holder, Shana, a girl first seen with cold eyes and a frown, now opens her heart to those around her. Aisaka Taiga was able to break away from her negative status with her friends by her side. After talking with someone, Suzumiya Haruhi was able to become more active and outgoing, for better or worse. Akiyama Mio and Nakano Azusa originally had a hard time dealing with their band mates’ laid-back attitudes. Now, they join along with their silly antics and are more relaxed than before. With a tower view, Katsura Hinagiku finally accepted the feelings within her heart. After living with someone, Eucliwood Hellscythe was ready to fight against her fate with her lover by her side. To cast away their old shells and bear fruits of "refined" versions of themselves: that is the power for which these seven girls are about to seek. |
