Featured Matches - ISML 2011 Diamond Period
Diamond 1 — 18 September 2011
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
vs. Fate Testarossa (Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha)
Despite their reigns in the ISML only being one year apart, time has evidently affected Katsura Hinagiku and Fate Testarossa in different ways. At the end of the 2008 ISML Regular Season, Fate came out on top with an impressive 60-3 record. In addition to this, she managed to dominate in the Postseason, en route to becoming the first girl in ISML history to attain the Heavenly Tiara. Fast-forward to the next year and you have Hinagiku's surprising Postseason victories against girls who finished the Regular Season with better records than her. Against all odds, Hina came out on top and swiped the Tiara away from Fate. A year later, in their meeting in 2010, Hina dominated Fate with a whopping 1148-vote victory. And now, to start off Diamond, these two former Tiara bearers meet again, with Fate looking to even the score. At the end of this battle of champions, which girl will emerge victorious? |
Aragaki Ayase (Ore no Imōto) vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
After six periods of ISML, the performances and actual strengths of these girls are more apparent. Earlier in the Regular Season, huge hopes were pinned on these two contestants. Ayase was predicted to challenge for a spot in the Postseason, while Charlotte was foreseen to challenge in a Necklace showdown. But the truth, which unfolds after six periods of the Regular Season, is a stark difference towards the early predictions placed upon them. Languishing mid-table with a mere 17 wins out of her 42 matches, Ayase is already out of the running for a spot in the Postseason. And although Charlotte has almost guaranteed her spot in the season-ending fireworks, she has not been able to enter a single necklace round match and her performance has been plummeting rapidly. With everybody starting with clean slates in the Diamond Period, will Aragaki Ayase be able to chalk up her first victory of the period over her opponent, or will Charlotte Dunois reign victorious instead? |
Hirasawa Ui (K-ON!) vs. Kōsaka Kirino (Ore no Imōto)
This match pits two exemplary imōto against one another. Often acting as the perfect foil for her rather ditzy older sister, Hirasawa Ui is the type of little sister almost everyone prefers to have. She is levelheaded, calm and collected, as well as supportive towards her sibling. Added to that is the fact that she is apparently a talented girl, as shown when she replaced her sick older sister seamlessly. On the other hand, Kōsaka Kirino is the type of imōto who everyone would be proud to have. Beautiful, athletic, as well intelligent, she is what people call the perfect model student, resulting in her older brother being overshadowed by her radiance most of the time. Even though there is tension between the two of them, they in time manage to mend their sibling relationship for the better. Which imōto will be the preferred choice of the voters—Hirasawa Ui or Kōsaka Kirino? |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
The Ruby Period was one to celebrate for both Sanzen'in Nagi and Shana. Having finally amassed 150 wins for her ISML career, Nagi looks to have a strong performance in Diamond. Unfortunately, the rich otaku's first opponent in the Diamond Period is none other than fellow Kugimiya Knight, Shana. Having obtained the fiery Ruby Necklace at long last, Shana now sets her eyes on the grand prize: the 2011 Heavenly Tiara. Despite the fact that her opponent is another Kugimiya Knight, this Flame Haze knows that she must show no mercy in order to reach the top. With a playoff spot and positioning on the leaderboard at stake for Nagi and Shana, respectively, a win here is essential. But, one of them is bound to come out empty handed. Will money and status be able to lift Nagi to victory, or will Shana's Nietono no Shana batter her into submission? |
Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Saber (Fate/stay night)
Round one serves up a couple of bokken clashes, one of which is the meeting between Seraphim and Saber. Sporting long, wavy hair, a pair of emerald-tinted eyes, as well as a curvaceous body, Seraphim doesn’t look like a martial artist, but instead a contestant in a beauty pageant. Yet underneath her dreamy look lies a kyūketsu ninja. Mastering the art of the Tsubamegaeshi sword technique, Seraphim will do everything within her powers to complete her given missions. The golden-haired Saber, on the other hand, does have an aura of authority around her. But, not many know the truth that lies behind her existence. She is in fact one of the seven servants summoned for the fifth Holy Grail War. Empowered by her blade, she will strive hard to ensure her master’s safety. As secret technique clashes with legend, which maiden will emerge victorious? |
Shiina (Angel Beats!) vs. Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!)
Another match-up pitting two bokken wielders is the fixture between Shiina and Aisaka Taiga. The silent Shiina joins the SSS in the Afterlife as an act of defiance against ‘Angel’ and ‘God’, not wanting her existence to cease. Her uncanny knack of sensing danger, born from her strict training, means that she is seldom caught unprepared when venturing into enemy territory. While she seems like a distant character, she is actually fond of cute things, especially stuffed animals. On the other hand, Taiga expresses her wishes openly in most things, except when it comes to love problems. She is easy to rile, and most people who incur her wrath get their just, physical rewards. Her tough exterior leads many people to fear her, without them knowing about her true inner nature—a lonely girl who needs all the help she can get. Which girl will be able to mask her inner self better, stuffed-animal-enamoured Shiina, or lonely girl Aisaka Taiga? |
Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) vs. Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!)
To kick off the Diamond Period, another K-ON! battle will tear at the hearts of those who support its characters. This time, the competitors are guitarist, Nakano Azusa, and keyboardist, Kotobuki Tsumugi. For Azusa, hard work throughout the Regular Season has helped her clinch a Postseason berth, as she currently sits at 4th in the overall standings with an excellent 38-4 record. For Hōkago Tea Time's lovable kōhai, this season is another one to celebrate. However, for Mugi the ojō-sama, her first season in ISML is definitely one to forget. Having only won 14 matches thus far, Mugi has learned there are indeed some things that money can't buy. But with Diamond starting, Mugi prepares to finish off this season with a strong note. She knows that getting past Azusa will be tough and that winning will give her the momentum she needs to succeed. When all is said and done, which musician will have played her way to victory—Nakano Azusa or Kotobuki Tsumugi? |
Kanbaru Suruga (Bakemonogatari) vs. Mirajane (FAIRY TAIL)
While one may appear to be fun and carefree and the other warm and loving, if you pluck a particular heartstring, you may see someone completely and horrifyingly different. The self-proclaimed lesbian, fujoshi, lolicon, and masochist, Kanbaru Suruga, has always admired her upperclassman since middle school. Upon realizing that her upperclassman was dating someone, Kanbaru unconsciously attacked him at night. It was not until he lifted her curse that she viewed him as a friend rather than a threat. Mirajane used to have a sharp tongue and pick fights. However, after the death of her sister, Mirajane became more restrained and reliant on others. Now, she is always seen with a smile on her face and speaks kind, warm words. In some bad moments she turns a blind eye; others can lead to a fearsome glare and an aura of what she was in the past. Both girls must stay focused and not lose their cool if they wish to win this bout. Will Suruga come out on top with the aid of a devil's part, or will Mirajane resort to her final form to finish her opponent in a blink of an eye? |

Diamond 2 — 20 September 2011
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Fate Testarossa (Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha)
The start of the Diamond Period couldn’t have been any more difficult for Fate Testarossa. After beginning the period with a loss to Katsura Hinagiku, another giant obstacle stands in Fate’s way—Shana, the girl who came out on top against all odds to capture the elusive Ruby Necklace a little over a week ago. With the momentum all on the Flame Haze’s side, this battle looks to be lopsided. However, the 2008 Heavenly Tiara bearer and talented mahō shōjo will not back down without a struggle, desiring to show the ISML world that she still has some fight left in her, despite being a victim to the sands of time. Defeating Shana here is, no doubt, a challenge, but the reward makes it all the more worthwhile. When the curtains finally close on this battle between veterans, which will prevail—fire or magic? |
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
vs. Haruna (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
As the main heroines in KoreZom square off against each other, distinct differences can be observed between Eucliwood Hellscythe and Haruna. Eucliwood’s long, silky hair is a stark difference to Haruna’s short haircut. While Haruna will stop at nothing to get her point across to the others, Eucliwood subtly communicates via the use of a pen and a piece of paper. The cutesy charm surrounding Eucliwood often mocks her status as the Necromancer of the Underworld. On the other hand, the hyperactive Haruna makes it easier for others to swallow the fact that she is a Masō Shōjo. While there are some parallels that can be drawn between these two maidens, like their petite statures as well as the place where they live, these merely blanket the fact that they oppose each other in most every other way. Will the quiet Eucliwood Hellscythe be able to flutter more hearts, or will the energetic Haruna be more enjoyable company instead? |
Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!) vs. Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!)
Wealth does not always lead to success—both in ISML and life—a fact that both contestants today can attest to. Coming from an extremely rich family, Kotobuki Tsumugi lived a life of luxury, so luxurious that she finds interest even in the most regular things. But despite all this, her time in ISML has been nothing like what she is used to. Failures, setbacks, and losses have plagued her all season, setting her in the bottom half of the overall standings. Although Aisaka Taiga is having no such trouble in ISML, her personal life is a whole other story. After her father’s elopement and her mother’s remarriage, the Palmtop Tiger’s sense of family vanished. Thus, she chose to live alone, suffering from the lack of love and warmth that she desperately needed. Knowing that these two girls both want your help today, whom will you support? |
Holo (Spice and Wolf) vs. Asahina Mikuru (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
While they cannot be heralded as the big hitters of ISML, both Holo and Asahina Mikuru have been around since the inception of ISML four years ago. The Wise Wolf of Yoitsu has racked up 136 wins in the Regular Season. Her best performance was during ISML 2009, when she managed to enter the Postseason, ending the tournament in 13th place. On the other hand, the time traveller, Mikuru, has managed to win 137 of her 218 fixtures up to date. Also entering the Postseason in ISML 2009, she finished the season in 11th place. For the past three years, these two maidens could hardly be separated statistically, as their final finishing positions were close to each other. Their head-to-head records read two wins to Mikuru and one win for Holo. Looking from almost every angle, this seems like a close match-up between two of ISML's veterans. Will Holo be able to even out her personal score against Mikuru, or will Mikuru chalk up her third win over Holo instead? |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
The second round of the Diamond Period bears witness to another clash between the Kugyū and HanaKana factions. Sporting her staple role as a petite, often abrasive, and wealthy young lady, Kugimiya Rie is represented by Sanzen’in Nagi. Being the only granddaughter of a very rich tycoon, Nagi leads a rather peculiar lifestyle compared to other typical, high-class courtesans. Instead of immersing her time perfecting her piano skills or gracefully entertaining her guests, the billionaire opts to fill her leisure time with manga and games. On the other hand, Hanazawa Kana voices the soft-spoken and meek Charlotte Dunois. Living in seclusion together with her mother in the countryside, she was forced to return to her father when her mother passed away. Allowing others to dictate her life, it can be argued that she portrays a damsel in distress perfectly. As the two main factions in ISML clash again, which camp will be able to propel their maiden towards victory—the Kugyū-backed Sanzen’in Nagi, or the HanaKana camp of Charlotte Dunois? |
Kurumizawa Ume (Kimi ni Todoke) vs. Ekaterina Kurae (Seikon no Qwaser)
If only these girls were able to stay true to their feelings, rather than put up facades of something unlike themselves. In Kurumizawa Ume's situation, she is said to be a well-refined and optimistic girl who always smiles. While a perfect student in image, even she needs to blow some steam off. She is just like everyone else: a girl with her own personal hardships to overcome who tries to find love at least once in her lifetime. Ekaterina Kurae may be a bubbly child who enjoys cute things, but do not let her childish perks deceive you. Ekaterina is a proud girl who humiliates her opponents before finishing them off. While some of her actions with her friends can be questioned, she does care about their wellbeing and will do whatever it takes to save them from harm. To understand and win the match wholly, they must stay true to themselves, as well as to those around them. Which girl will muster the right courage to dominate her opponent? |

Diamond 3 — 22 September 2011
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!)
Both Katsura Hinagiku and Sanzen'in Nagi hate to lose, and yet despite being rivals for one man's affection, they still share strong levels of respect and friendship for each other. Being constantly conscious of their flat chests and being arguably tsundere in nature are just some of the similarities that these two share. In fact, it can be seen that with the use of Romanization, "Nagi" can actually be found in "Hinagiku". But, behind these surprising similarities lie striking differences. While Hina is depicted as a tomboy and a feline, Nagi is seen as a hikikomori and a dragon. On top of this, the two live completely different lifestyles—Hina working hard to find success due to her debt-ridden past and Nagi spending her wealth-filled days in the comfort of her mansion. Today's match pits these girls against each other in a different, though not unfamiliar, battleground. In the three ISML matches in which these two have faced each other, Hinagiku has come out on top in all of them. In the end, which one will bring home a win to her surrogate family? Which one will have the honor of your support? |
Asahina Mikuru (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
vs. Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
Asahina Mikuru and Eucliwood Hellscythe are far from being the normal, ‘shy and cute’ maidens who can easily be found everywhere. Possessing supernatural powers, they have the capacity to alter the world at a whim. With her ability to traverse through time, Mikuru is tasked to keep an eye out for a peculiar girl who is oblivious towards her own powers. Trotting the very fabric of the time and space continuum, she cannot allow any irregularities that could utterly destroy the tenuous equilibrium of the universe. Housing an immense power, Eucliwood is tasked to maintain the balance between the world of the living and the dead. The extent of her power is that by merely uttering words, she brings catastrophic ramifications towards the target, and even the world. She takes great care in keeping everything bottled up within her tiny chest. As they face off against each other, which one will come out victorious—the time traveller, Asahina Mikuru, or the Necromancer of the Underworld, Eucliwood Hellscythe? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
vs. Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
The third round of the Diamond Period bears witness to a match-up between two contrasting girls—Nagato Yuki being a silent and taciturn bibliophile, while Huang Lingyin is an energetic maiden in love. Rarely giving her opinion, unless asked, Yuki’s presence is hardly noticeable. Sitting calmly in her favourite chair, she immerses herself in thick books while the other brigade members busily attend to the club leader’s whimsical needs. Preferring to give short and precise answers most of the time, it is hard to communicate with her when she suddenly reverts to long and exhaustive explanations. On the other hand, Lingyin makes sure that her presence is felt when she is around. Her chatterbox nature makes it easy to befriend her, but this comes at a cost. She is willing to go the extra mile to impose herself on others when she sees fit, either by her strength or her tongue lashings. Which type of maiden will the voters prefer—a silent kūdere type, like Nagato Yuki, or an energetic, genki type a la Huang Lingyin? |
Nymph (Sora no Otoshimono) vs. Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!)
In this battle of the heavens, Nymph finds herself up against a formidable opponent in the form of Tachibana Kanade. Nicknamed "Tenshi" by the members of the SSS because of her angelic physique, Kanade has used her divine powers to dominate all of her opponents thus far in her first ISML season. Today, the girl who stands in her way is Nymph, who is currently in her 2nd ISML season. Unlike Kanade, Nymph has struggled in ISML, having only won 11 games in her career. Despite their different ISML performances, these two angels have undeniably had to endure hardships in their lives. For Kanade, it was at the hands of the SSS, and for Nymph, it was because of her master, "The Master of the Skies." But today, these two heavenly beings will get a chance to feel better about themselves as they look to defeat each other and obtain a win. In the end, which pair of angelic wings will capture your heart and your vote? |
Furukawa Nagisa (CLANNAD) vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
There are only a handful of contestants who have managed to stay in ISML since the first tournament four years ago. Two of these contestants square off in the third round of the Diamond Period. In terms of strength, Furukawa Nagisa has always been in the middle tiers. Her best finish to a Regular Season was during ISML 2009 when she narrowly missed the cut to enter the Postseason. While her performance fluctuates quite a lot, it is always within the middle reaches of the table. On the other hand, her fellow veteran, Suzumiya Haruhi, is considered an upper tier contestant. She has never missed the Postseason in ISML, and has consistently finished her seasons as the 8th or 9th-placed maiden. Haruhi has also managed to topple Nagisa in their previous three meetings. Will Furukawa Nagisa be able to turn the tide against her opponent, or will Suzumiya Haruhi be able to exert her superiority once again? |
Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD) vs. Kotobuki Tsumugi (K-ON!)
While they may be out of contention for this year's Postseason, Fujibayashi Kyō and Kotobuki Tsumugi square off in what should be an interesting match-up. Kyō is quite quick-tempered and usually lets her actions do the talking. Nevertheless, she is a kind friend who will listen to any matter, serious or not. When the situation calls for it, she is the first person to take a stand and state her opinion. Tsumugi has a bubbly personality, with high interests in middle-class life. A warm girl to be around, Tsumugi makes sure that her friends feel as cared for as possible without spoiling them too much. While there are moments where she behaves rather oddly, she always follows the flow of her friends and quickly tags along with their unpredictable journeys. When this match unfolds, will Kyō score a victory over the K-ON! newcomer, or will Tsumugi lower the veteran's rank further? |
Caster (Fate/stay night) vs. Rider (Fate/stay night)
In the darkest area on the darkest night, two beings clash in the sky. One in a dark cloak decorates the sky with magic. While she originally wished to obtain the grail, she found something else that she would risk her life for—a person who treats her genuinely and kindly. For the sake of preserving those moments, she would go as far as recharging her energy via the normal populous. Another being with silky, pink hair and a mask moves around continuously, using her territory to her advantage. She has no intention of obtaining the grail, but fights to protect her Master. After being around her summoner, she came to sympathize and understand her feelings. Because she fears opposition may harm the Master, it is up to her to defend her, even at the cost of her own life. Both only wish to protect their caretakers and allow them to enjoy their lives to the fullest. If it means defeating a servant who has the ability of ruining their precious moments, then so be it... |

Diamond 4 — 25 September 2011
Akiyama Mio (K-ON!) vs. Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
Back in Emerald 4, Akiyama Mio defeated Shinonono Hōki by almost 2700 votes. Today, another match-up between two Yōko Hikasa-voiced characters takes place, with Mio going up against Seraphim. Of the three characters in ISML voiced by Yōko Hikasa this year, only Mio has managed to make it into the Top 16. Her recent success does not come as a surprise, however, as she is the current holder of the Heavenly Tiara. Although her strength has decreased noticeably, coupled with the arrival of strong newcomers, Hōkago Tea Time's bassist still sits comfortably at 8th, with a Postseason spot in the books. On the other hand, Seraphim's year has definitely been one to forget, with only four wins out of 45 contests, thus far. Despite the fact that this battle seems lopsided on the surface, the vampire ninja knows that she may be able to take advantage of Mio's fears, and snatch away a victory swiftly and stealthily. And so, will Seraphim sink her fangs into triumph, or will her opponent's music distract her from the task at hand? |
Kasugano Sora (Yosuga no Sora) vs. Huang Lingyin (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Both Kasugano Sora and Huang Lingyin are two maidens who are deeply in love. Weak since birth, Sora was deprived of her childhood. The only ray of warmth came from her beloved, who kept her spirits up while she was bedridden in the hospital. More compellingly, with her parents’ sudden passing, her heart was shattered—with no close relatives to take care of Sora, it was up to him to accompany and shelter her. As the two tried to gather the pieces of her shattered life, their bond tightened. While these same problems have not befallen Lingyin, she still harbours a deep love for her chosen one. Knowing Lingyin since childhood, the object of her affection unwittingly agreed to a promise the pair made during school, not knowing the full extent of said promise. After a year away from him, Lingyin entered the academy in which he was enrolled just to be with him, and maybe rekindle any feelings the boy had for her in the past. As these two love-struck girls square off against each other, which one will be the victor? |
Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Izumi Konata (Lucky ☆ Star)
Today's match between Suzumiya Haruhi and Izumi Konata focuses on two of Hirano Aya's more notable voice acting roles. Personality-wise, Haruhi and Konata are totally different—Haruhi being somewhat of a narcissist and Konata being a hardcore otaku. In terms of ISML performance, Haruhi has evidently been doing better than Konata. On the other hand, the two are also similar as they both are considered "leaders" by their friends, whether this leadership is sought after or not. As the leader of the SOS Brigade, Haruhi is accustomed to getting what she wants, often using others to satisfy her needs. But today, Konata, who is ironically a big fan of hers, stands in the way. In the end, will the eccentric and unpredictable Haruhi be able to come away with the victory, or will Kona-chan's knowledge of Haruhi be all that she needs to steal a win here? |
Holo (Spice and Wolf) vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (CLANNAD)
Languishing in the middle of the leaderboard, Holo and Fujibayashi Kyō have already been eliminated from the race to the Postseason. All that is left for them is to finish as high up in the table as possible. Holo’s late revival in fortune was too little too late in remedying her atrocious run between the fifth round of the Topaz Period and the fourth round of the Sapphire Period, where she went on a run of 13 losses in a row. While Kyō’s performances in the periods were consistent, scoring three or four wins per period was not enough to garner her a slot in the Postseason. Statistically, these two veterans have faced each other four times, with the victories split between them. Holo beat Kyō in their KBM 2008 singles match, as well as in ISML 2009, while Kyō returned the favour in ISML 2008 and ISML 2010. Which veteran will chalk up a third win over her opponent in this fifth installment—Holo, or Fujibayashi Kyō ? |
Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Kuroi Mato (Black ★ Rock Shooter)
HanaKana fans face another tough choice today as Gokō Ruri and Kuroi Mato prepare to face each other. Although both girls are currently in their first ISML season, Ruri has been overshadowing Mato with an excellent record of 41-4. Sporting gothic lolita clothes and possessing a sharp tongue, Ruri, is one girl with whom you don't want to get into a verbal fight. Her endless supply of insults and comebacks can leave those who dare challenge her in a state of silence. Similarly, the Black★Rock Shooter's (Mato's other self) choice of attire also consists of dark-themed clothes. However, her weapon of choice is of the physical kind, as she goes into battle wielding her ★Rock Cannon and Black Blade. At the conclusion of this match, will the daggers coming out of Kuroneko's mouth be enough to subdue the BRS, or will her opponent's weapons be too much for her to handle? |
Sanzen'in Nagi (Hayate no Gotoku!) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
As the end is nigh for the Regular Season, another Kugyū and HanaKana clash is on the horizon. The Kugyū camp is represented by petite, otaku millionaire Sanzen’in Nagi while the HanaKana camp retaliates with cute and adorable Sengoku Nadeko. Nagi is a strong-willed girl, who does not sport any facade to mask her true feelings. An avid gamer and manga reader, and a shut in, this grandchild of an old mogul enjoys her life to the fullest, not caring about what others might say to her because of her high echelon. Nadeko, on the other hand, is a meek girl, who would rather keep her problems bottled up within her, writhing alone in the face of danger. She has some difficulties making new friends due to her shy nature; hence, Nadeko treasures the few friends she manages to gather. Will the Kugyū faction or the HanaKana faction see the other off in this match-up between Sanzen’in Nagi and Sengoku Nadeko? |
Kokutō Azaka (Kara no Kyōkai) vs. Ushiromiya Ange (Umineko no Naku Koro ni)
Spellcaster, witch, it does not matter. They will each always be that little sister who looks up to her big brother. Azaka should try not to be too clingy; she does not wish to make a bad name for herself. Then again, this spellcaster has the power to ignite anything she wants, so people should think twice about saying anything. Azaka should also try not to monitor his personal life. A single misunderstanding can turn into a heated, one-sided, personal rivalry that the other does not wish to share. Even though Ange wants to help him figure this game out, she can only sit on the sidelines and give away as little information as possible. She may be a witch, but with a frail body, there is only so much she can say to him. Ange has been alone for so long with the belief that all but one of her family members has died. She wishes to embrace him and talk about many memories, but the cost is her disappearance. Both girls are good siblings at heart, but with which little sister will the voters side? |

Diamond 5 — 27 September 2011
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Victorique de Blois (GOSICK)
With the end of the Regular Season drawing nearer and nearer, every win is that much more important for Victorique de Blois. Currently sitting at 17th, the Golden Fairy, who is in her first ISML season, needs to give it her all from here on out in order to grab herself a spot in the Postseason. Standing in her way today is the Necromancer of the Underworld, Eucliwood Hellscythe. Also in her first ISML season, Eucliwood has already clinched a Postseason spot. Although this match-up today doesn't mean much to her, she knows that a convincing win today will send a strong message to the rest of the final contestants. With time ticking away for Victorique, will she be able to use her Wellspring of Wisdom and figure out a way to pull off an upset victory over Eu, or will her opponent's deadly words put a big dent in her hopes? |
Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari) vs. Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
Fresh from her slim victory over a member of the Kugyū Knights, the representative of the HanaKana faction, Sengoku Nadeko, now faces their favoured champion: Shana. Currently on the cusp of elimination from the Postseason fireworks, Nadeko needs to pull a rabbit out of her hat if she is to repeat her performance from ISML 2010, when she managed to enter the finale. But standing in front of her is the indomitable colossus of the saimoe world. The Flame Haze has booked her place in the Postseason and has also won the elusive Ruby Necklace. With both contestants scoring perfect Diamond Period scores until this round, whichever way the pendulum swings will result in the first defeat of the period for the opposing girl. As another match-up takes centre stage, will Sengoku Nadeko be able to get consecutive wins against the Kugyū Knights, or will Shana get her fourth win against the Order of the Lotus instead? |
Saber (Fate/stay night) vs. Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
This match-up pits two non-human maidens against each other. Summoned to serve her kind-hearted and idealistic master, Saber is in fact the heroic spirit of a mythical knight-king. Armed with her trusted weapon, she seeks the chance to rectify her past mistakes from when she was still a human by winning the fifth Holy Grail War. Upholding the virtues of a proper knight, she will not resort to dirty tricks in order to achieve her goals. On the other hand, created by a group of sentient beings from outer space, Nagato Yuki can be loosely categorised as an Artificial Human Interface. Housing the ability to alter the world by manipulating environmental data, Yuki was tasked to keep an eye on a singular entity, one that might provide Yuki’s creators with the answer to their problem. Stoic and taciturn in nature, she silently observes her target from afar. As these celestial beings square off against each other, who will come out on top—Saber, or Nagato Yuki? |
Laura Bodewig (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Shinonono Hōki (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
Laura Bodewig and Shinonono Hōki are among the few girls in the world who are blessed with personal IS machines for their usage. Laura's personal custom IS, the imposing Schwarzer Regen, has been fine tuned primarily as a heavy-artillery IS. To offset its rather lacklustre melee capabilities, the suit is fitted with the Active Inertia Canceller to enhance its defense. With Laura piloting the suit, the raw power of Schwarzer Regen could be seen clearly, as she vanquished a sniper-type IS from England teamed up with a melee-type IS from China. Hōki’s personal suit, Akatsubaki, is the first fourth-generation IS suit in the world, developed by her sister. With exceptional speed and agility, the suit focuses on melee combat with its fitted twin katana. With the ability to fully recharge its energy, Akatsubaki can endure long battles when other suits have already run dry. Will the Schwarzer Regen be able to help Laura Bodewig claim victory today, or will the Akatsubaki swing the tide towards Shinonono Hōki instead? |
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)
vs. Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>)
It is not an exaggeration when it's said that many people often take their parents for granted. But for those who lost them due to unfortunate tragedies, they truly understand how precious their parents were. For both Katsura Hinagiku and Charlotte Dunois, life without loving families has caused them to struggle immensely. Whether it is from abandonment, like in Hina's case, or from death and negligence, like in Charlotte's case, the pain is, at times, unbearable. Despite this, these two strong-willed and brave girls continue on, living life to the fullest and not turning back; they look ahead to the bright future and not to the dark past. It is definitely not easy to walk in their shoes, which should serve as good reminders to all those out there who are lucky enough to have caring families to appreciate their presences every day. And so, in their battle today, who will you support—Katsura Hinagiku or Charlotte Dunois? |
Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!) vs. Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!)
Family is traditionally an institution made up by the unification of a father, a mother, and children. For many, this institution seems superficial, but for both Nakamura Yuri and Aisaka Taiga, that is hardly the case. The ways in which they treated their families were total opposites of one another. As the eldest sibling looking over the household while her parents were away, Yuri watched grotesque scenes unfold in front of her own eyes. Having tried in vain to appease the aggressors, she now curses herself for being powerless. On the other hand, a crumbling household greeted Taiga as her parents decided to part ways. Unwilling to live with her new stepmother, Taiga chose to live alone in a high security apartment. With her trust betrayed, this little girl seeks solace by living separately. As they finally find warmth and care from their new families, which one of these maidens will embrace the ties of family tighter, Nakamura Yuri or Aisaka Taiga? |
Izumi Konata (Lucky ☆ Star) vs. Seraphim (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
After crushing defeats at the hands of characters who share the same seiyū as themselves, Izumi Konata and Seraphim look to bounce back with a win here in Diamond 5. A hardcore otaku with an eroge obsession, Konata is far from your normal teenage girl. Even with these time-consuming hobbies of hers, she still does decently in her studies, thanks in large part to her expertise at pulling all-nighters. Seraphim, on the other hand, is in a totally different world. As a vampire ninja, she fights her enemies with a mix of ninja reflexes and vampire skills. Although she intended to serve the Necromancer of the Underworld, she ended up becoming a servant of a lowly, murdered human, who—much to her dismay—was revived as a zombie. Whether their struggles consist of human concerns, like balancing school and entertainment, or out-of-this-world duties, like serving a zombie, both Konata and Seraphim always try their best to overcome them. At the end of this battle, which of these two will be able to stand in victory? |
Yui (Angel Beats!) vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
With the playoffs so close, it's easy to focus on the race for the top seed and the push for the final few playoff spots...but the middle of the pack should not be ignored. Suzumiya Haruhi currently sits 10th in the overall standings, which is one spot ahead of the seed Katsura Hinagiku was when she won the Tiara in 2009. Haruhi has played like a champion lately, winning 20 of her last 21 matches. Her opposition today is Yui, who has performed consistently well all season. She's won at least five matches in each period and has avoided any big letdowns, but she's still looking to notch a signature victory. A triumph over one of the biggest winners in ISML would fit that bill nicely, but can she cool off the red-hot Brigade Leader enough to do it? |
Minami Chiaki (Minami-ke) vs. Ryūmonbuchi Tōka (Saki)
Princesses in their own rights, Minami Chiaki and Ryūmonbuchi Tōka square off to see who should be given the title of "hime." The self-proclaimed princess of Class 5-A, Minami Chiaki, has much to say about her friends and classmates. Despite her vast knowledge in miscellaneous subjects, with her half-closed eyes and sharp tongue, it is hard to see how everything can revolve around her so easily. Like many little sisters, Chiaki looks up to her older sister as a role model and aspires to be as kind and graceful as she. Ryūmonbuchi Tōka takes on the rich girl archetype and makes sure that she is the best at every challenge known in existence. When it comes to mahjong, Tōka can become a rather fierce competitor, and players need to think twice before trying to outmaneuver her. Although she has a high and mighty attitude, she cares greatly for her family and classmates, sometimes taking them on free trips under her name to relax and have fun. This match only has enough room for one princess, but who will be the one to have the last laugh? |

Gokō Ruri (Kuroneko) (Ore no Imōto) vs. Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!)
Not only is this match-up an intra-seiyū battle, but it is also half of the calculation needed for the “moepocalypse” to occur. Arguably the more exciting of the two, this Diamond 6 battle pits two newcomers voiced by Hanazawa Kana against each other. On top of this, Tachibana Kanade and Gokō Ruri are ranked #1 and #2, respectively, when it comes to contestants who are making their first ISML appearances. Out of all her opponents thus far, Ruri is arguably going to be the toughest, considering the fact that she pulled off amazing upsets against the 2009 and 2010 Heavenly Tiara winners. However, Kanade is not one to be easily fazed as she is currently the most dominant contestant in ISML history, with a whopping VD of 129,105 in 47 matches. The clash between these two is undoubtedly going to be big, with the result having the potential to be even more immense. Will Kuroneko be able to prevent the “moepocalypse” from happening today with a surprising victory over the immortal-looking Tenshi, or will the angel continue her dominance and crush the black cat with ease? |
Saber (Fate/stay night) vs. Senjōgahara Hitagi (Bakemonogatari)
As the race for the Postseason enters its final furlong, it is imperative that the contestants vying for the last few spots to give it their all. Senjōgahara Hitagi’s place in the final sixteen is far from secure. With only a win separating her from the cut-off point, a defeat in the sixth round of the Diamond Period might prove fatal for her. After suffering a crushing defeat against the current Tiara holder, she can ill-afford to lose two games in a spin, as she is against another aspiring contestant, ready to pounce on any opening towards the finale. Meanwhile, Saber currently trails the final incumbent for the Postseason by a game’s deficit. For her to make it into the top sixteen, she must overcome the odds and beat her opponent, because she has relatively weaker head-to-head records against the other maidens contesting for the Postseason. If she mimics her performance against last year’s semi-finalist, she can kiss her chances for the Postseason goodbye. Will Senjōgahara Hitagi be able to finally clinch her place at the expense of Saber, or will the outcome favour Saber instead? |
Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Hirasawa Yui (K-ON!)
With only two matches left in the Regular Season, the Postseason and Heavenly Tiara don’t seem to be the only things on the minds of the voters. If both sides of the equation end up with a win today, the so-called “moepocalypse” will, in fact, occur in Diamond 7. But Misaka Mikoto has to focus on her match against Hirasawa Yui today in order to not let a win slip from her grasp. The Electromaster would like nothing more than to be part of ISML history and knows that one mistake can cost her everything. For Yui, this match is also critical for her as her chance to enter the Postseason hangs in the balance. With a loss here, she will be eliminated from the race for the Heavenly Tiara. With so much at stake, this match-up has just turned into one of the most anticipated battles of the round. When the dust finally settles, will Misaka Mikoto move one step closer to being the first girl in ISML history to finish the Regular Season with no losses, or will Yui stave off elimination for another day, and prevent the “moepocalypse” from occurring? |
Eucliwood Hellscythe (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) vs. Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!)
With their Postseason spots secured, both Eucliwood Hellscythe and Aisaka Taiga don’t have much to prove during the rest of the Regular Season. Boasting perfect records of five wins each in the Diamond Period, Eucliwood and Taiga have navigated the period with relative ease. Armed with her fearsome death scythe, Eucliwood scythed down most of her opponents effortlessly. She hopes to make her first necklace the Diamond—the last up for grabs this year—but a defeat against Taiga might severely dent her chances at obtaining it. With the aid of her bokken, most of Taiga’s challengers have been subdued. She also snatched away the Emerald Necklace, so a win is not paramount for her. It would be nice, however, for her to end the period undefeated. To achieve that, she must hurdle Eucliwood. As these cute, petite, and long-haired maidens battle it out, which girl will emerge victorious? |
Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
Before going on to Diamond 7 in order to face Nagato Yuki, Akiyama Mio has another large obstacle blocking her way to the Diamond Necklace in the form of Suzumiya Haruhi. The result of this match might as well be the deciding factor of who has a better chance at the necklace. While Mio’s strength is decreasing ever so slightly, Haruhi’s has managed to stay relatively stable. As the winner of the 2008 Diamond Necklace, Haruhi would love to grab hold of its power again. On the other hand, Mio has yet to win a necklace since her first one back in the Aquamarine Period of 2010. If she lets this chance slip by, it may as well be her last, assuming her strength takes a drop during the off-season. With both girls eyeing the same prize, things are definitely going to get a bit heated. Will Mio rise to the challenge today and triumph over Haruhi, or will she realize that her opponent’s strength shouldn’t be underestimated? |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Yui (Angel Beats!)
The penultimate round of the Regular Season pits two contrasting contestants against each other. While both are cute beyond measure, Nagato Yuki is often described as a silent, stoic, and taciturn girl. Preferring to give short answers when asked, it is difficult to start a conversation with her when she starts giving long and exhaustive explanations, where dictionaries and reference books would be handy for deciphering. Usually taking a backseat role in the SOS brigade, she silently observes her surroundings and only acts when needed. On the other hand, Yui is a high-spirited girl. Her self-confidence and reservoir of boundless energy can be contagious. Willing to put herself in the forefront of ‘Girls Dead Monster’ after the disappearance of the band’s former leader, Yui is not the type who shrinks away from responsibilities. As these cute maidens square off against each other, will the lure of a silent Nagato Yuki be able to appease the voters, or will the high-strung Yui get the nod instead? |
Kaname Madoka (Puella Magi Madoka ☆ Magica)
vs. Takamachi Nanoha (Mahō Shōjo Lyrical Nanoha)
Please, let us not fight. Why must we clash until one of us is unable to move anymore? I have seen my friends suffer behind my back, without my knowledge of their suffering. I have been hidden from their cries, their desires, and their wills to live. I wanted to help them; I wanted to reach out to them and tell them that I am here to support them. I am the reason that they are in such depressed states. I was not mentally strong enough to shoulder their pains, to relieve them from their intolerable states. I do not wish to go through the same trauma that I had with my best friend. I am tired of going through an endless loop of horrid times. Not only is it sad to see in the moment, but also painful to watch. I cannot take this anymore. Surely, you must be thinking the exact same thing as well, right? So, please, I beg you, lower your weapon. Can you not see that we are both one and the same? Can we not talk this over? Here, take my hand. Let us be friends. Is it too much to ask? |

Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index) vs. Tachibana Kanade (Angel Beats!)
I stand atop the skyscraper overlooking the city, knowing that this day would come sooner or later. As dark clouds in the night sky set the mood for the upcoming confrontation between the two immortal figures of ISML 2011, it’s obvious that I am putting myself in a lot of danger. And yet, I can’t bring myself to look away from the scene unfolding before my eyes. The Electromaster and Tenshi slowly walk towards each other with determined looks on their faces. Facing a winner-take-all situation, both girls have no intention of losing. Surprisingly, the seemingly peaceful Kanade makes the first move by calling forth her HandSonic, while Mikoto responds by preparing her Railgun. After another moment of silence, the two suddenly rush at each other and the battle begins. While the sound of electricity clashing with steel fills the air, I am fascinated at how the two are able to match each other’s moves perfectly, something that none of their previous opponents were able to do. Join me in order to witness the most anticipated match-up, known to many as the “moepocalypse.” Diamond 7 brings us perhaps the most epic finish of the year. Tachibana Kanade, much like an all-conquering spear, smashed through all her opponents thus far with sheer force, while Misaka Mikoto, like an impenetrable shield, repelled all attempts by other contestants who tried to sweep her aside like they did with many others. They have both racked up 48 wins throughout the year, and only one more win is needed for either of them to become the first girl in ISML history to win all her matches in the Regular Season—quite a lucrative title. However, as we all know from the original story of spear and shield, only one may prevail in the match to obtain the title, and neither of them will give up without a fight. Which girl will win? Without further ado, let the final battle commence! |
Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu) vs. Akiyama Mio (K-ON!)
Fresh from her annihilation of a second-tier contestant, Nagato Yuki sets her sights on another perfect round to close her Regular Season statistics. But a huge stumbling block has been placed upon her in the shape of the current Tiara bearer, Akiyama Mio. While Mio just managed to scrape past her second-tier challenger during the sixth round of Diamond, it can be argued that her vanquished foe is a lot stronger than the contestant vaporised by Yuki. Though both titans have remained undefeated during the last period of the Regular Season, that fact is bound to change as they square off against each other. Their previous two encounters in ISML happened last year, when Mio was at the peak of her prowess, and she managed to overcome Yuki on both occasions. But a year has passed and her power seems to be waning ever so slightly, while Yuki’s strength seems to be picking up. The massive chasm of strength between these two maidens may have evaporated. Will it be a case of ‘third time’s the charm’ for the silent Nagato Yuki, or will Akiyama Mio triumph over her once again? |
Yui (Angel Beats!) vs. Senjōgahara Hitagi (Bakemonogatari)
With their slots in the Final 16 confirmed, both Yui and Senjōgahara Hitagi can now focus on the race to enter the Necklace Round of the Diamond Period. With her suffering two losses already, Yui cannot allow another in the finale if she still harbours any lingering wish to grab the final necklace. She must use everything that she can muster, be it her voice, her guitar, or her highly contagious energy, to entice the voters to pick her as the winner of this bout. Hitagi, with five wins to her name during this phase, knows that she will definitely enter the necklace shootout if she can grab a win against her opponent. As they are almost equal in strength, Hitagi will have to use her scissors, staples, and sharp tongue tactically if she wants the tide of the match to favour her instead. This is a battle that could shake up the Necklace Round. Which maiden will smile as the dust settles—Yui, or Senjōgahara Hitagi? |
Saber (Fate/stay night) vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
It may not be wise to point a weapon at a deity, but desperate times call for desperate measures as Saber challenges Suzumiya Haruhi for that final push to the Postseason. Saber is not out of the competition just yet. One more win is all that she needs in order for her to have any glimmer of hope for making it to the Top 16. Saber has had a roller coaster of a ride this season, and it may be that she had fallen short of her original game plan. Now, in the final moments of the Regular Season, not only does Saber need to think about walking out of this match victorious, but she also must compose herself. A single flaw may prove to be devastating in times like these. Haruhi, however, shows no signs of hiding her dominance; she is only focused on obtaining the prized Tiara, not on this match. That may be the opening Saber needs to win. With the final seconds of the clock ticking, will Saber be able to spend her glory days in the Postseason once more, or will Haruhi prevent such an event from happening? |
Charlotte Dunois (IS <Infinite Stratos>) vs. Sengoku Nadeko (Bakemonogatari)
Last chance saloon—that is the theme for this last round of the Diamond Period. One side of the coin pits Charlotte Dunois against Sengoku Nadeko. This match-up will severely hurt the fans of Hanazawa Kana, as a defeat inflicted on Nadeko will mean that she cannot join the race to the Heavenly Tiara. Her task here is simple, defeat Charlotte and pray that Lady Luck smiles upon her, as her destiny is no longer in her hands. As for Charlotte, a win here will enable her to end the season in 13th place, and avoid potential match-ups against the three big hitters of this year’s ISML. While her place in the final 16 was confirmed three rounds ago, finishing as high up as possible gives her a better chance in the Postseason. All that is left for the Order of the Lotus fans to decide is whether they want a fourth HanaKana contestant in the Postseason, thus backing Nadeko but severely weakening Charlotte’s chances, or if they want their three confirmed contestants to have the better chances. |
Nakamura Yuri (Angel Beats!) vs. Victorique de Blois (GOSICK)
Another match that has a huge bearing on the Postseason is the fixture pitting Nakamura Yuri and Victorique de Blois against one another. A win for Nakamura Yuri, while not of utmost importance, might help her end as high as the 13th seed. This may also help her when the race for the Heavenly Tiara resumes in November, as she will avoid the top three seeds vying for the coveted Tiara. A strong performance against Victorique will lay down some markers for the other contestants to know that Yuri means business. On the other hand, Victorique understands that if she wins this bout, she will be in the final 16. A loss for her, coupled with an unfavourable result in the other match-up between two HanaKana girls, might spell the end for her journey in this year’s ISML. While she can take comfort in having a better head-to-head against said contestant, she cannot take things for granted. In the end, which maiden will smile—Nakamura Yuri, or Victorique de Blois? |
Shana (Shakugan no Shana) vs. Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku!)

With both young women secure in the Postseason and Shana out of the necklace running for the Diamond, will Hinagiku's Wooden Masamune be enough to let her enter the final match of the season with a 7-0 record, or will Shana's Nietono no Shana turn that into a 6-1? |
